We just got another hint that Sonos headphones will be launching soon
After what feels like a very long wait, all signs point to an imminent launch of the Sonos headphones – and we’ve just received another major clue that suggests these will be arriving within the next few months.
From Reddit (through 9to5Mac), the headphones have just gone through the approval process with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the US, meaning they have received regulatory approval to go on sale.
There’s not too much information here – other than that they’re headphones, with ear cups and Wi-Fi support – but it usually doesn’t take long for products to go on sale after they go into service ahead of the FCC.
The latest rumors suggest that June is the month the Sonos headphones will be unveiled, which would fit if they receive FCC approval in March. There’s also talk that Sonos could unveil a party speaker at the same time.
What to expect
While we wait for the Sonos headphones to be made official, we’ve had a lot of leaks about what to expect. Sonos CEO Patrick Spence has gone on record saying that a “new product in a multi-billion dollar category” is on the way – hint hint.
Patents already filed by Sonos reveal that these cans come with Wi-Fi connectivity, and it’s clear you can use them almost seamlessly with an existing Sonos speaker system – switching audio streams between devices as needed.
Other features mentioned in the patents include support for noise cancellation technology and possibly a digital assistant that allows you to talk through the headphones. Of course, all of this is subject to confirmation and plans for products are always subject to change.
In terms of price, the Sonos headphones are apparently going to cost around $449, which works out to around £350 / AU$675. That would undercut what you pay for the AirPods Max, which will be a challenge for the Sonos headphones.
