We bought a 1960s home – here is what we had to do in our first week… it was A LOT of work

A couple has taken to TikTok to document the stunning renovation project they embarked on after purchasing a 1960s home.

Nicole Halliday posted to the platform images of all the things she and her partner Blair, from Scotland, had to do when they moved into the house.

The video, which has been viewed more than 55,000 times, saw them first start by completely demolishing the kitchen and dining room wall of the property.

They then set about removing wood chips and wallpaper from parts of the house by steam cleaning so they could redecorate the house. The couple noted that this particular task felt “endless.”

Blair then took on the task of removing the kitchen tiles and plywood, which was a difficult challenge because they were “cemented to the floor.”

Further ‘demolition and wallpapering’ was then required, with the camera showing a mountain of wood and wallpaper covering a floor that is barely visible due to the enormous amount of rubble.

The couple concluded the video by noting that they were “expanding the pantry,” and with the good news that they had found “a hidden wine cellar under the floor hatch,” while all the bottles in the cellar remained unopened.

After Blair and Nicole moved into the house, the couple found a note from the home’s only previous owners, which read, “We wish you the best of luck. My father and mother bought this first house in 1962 as a new construction for €3141, so you are only the second owners.

‘We have many wonderful memories of our childhood here and we hope you will have happy times here too.’

The process of such a massive renovation was not easy. The couple admitted that they discovered many cracks in the walls, and that they were ‘leaking everywhere’, leading to ‘rotting floorboards’.

Additionally, they claimed they were told the boiler was two years old, but later discovered it was actually from 2010.

As would be expected with a 1960s home, there was also the challenge of ‘layer upon layer of questionable wallpaper’, from floral patterns to bright yellow.

One room had no fewer than six layers that had been built up over the years.

However, they shared images of the wine cellar, which appeared to contain at least fifty unopened bottles of various wine types that could be of enormous value.

Comments from shocked viewers about the amount of wine the couple found urged them to have it valued as soon as possible.

One user wrote: ‘Get that wine appraised! keep a bottle, drink a bottle, sell the rest’.

A second added: ‘You could make a fortune from that wine.’

Another commented: ‘I need to know you’re going to try the wine.’
