Wayne Rooney’s DC United were interested in both Jesse Lingard and Ravel Morrison this summer, according to a new report.

Lingard is without a club after leaving Nottingham Forest and Morrison is also a free agent after playing for DC United last season.

And according to the Washington PostLingard held talks with the club this summer, while DC also wanted Morrison back.

According to the Post, Lingard was looking for a guaranteed long-term contract, which didn’t seem to sign him.

Rooney cited salary cap issues at a recent press conference, saying the club is unlikely to add free agents before the September 13 MLS roster deadline.

Morrison, who played fourteen league games for DC United last season, has reportedly been training with the club lately.

Rooney said he was “brilliant,” but the club initially refused to bring him back for a second season and bought out his contract for $850,000 this summer, according to the Post.

The report also says that the club held talks with former Swansea and West Ham striker Andre Ayew.

Ayew was Lingard’s teammate at Forest last season.

The ex-Manchester United man, who left the club in 2022, recently hinted he would be open to a move to Saudi Arabia and was also spotted training opposite Inter Miami’s DRV PNK stadium.

“I’m considering all options,” Lingard recently told Sky Sports. “I’ve never ruled out any team or club, so for me it’s just picking the right team and it has to be right for me.

“In the end I just want to play football and that’s all I want to do.”

Rooney’s D.C. United hold their final Eastern Conference play-in spot after a 4-0 victory over the Chicago Fire on Saturday night.
