Wayne Rooney has spearheaded tributes to Harry Kane after the striker broke England’s record for all-time top goalscorer.
Kane scored from the penalty spot against Italy to overtake Rooney at the top of the list with 54 goals and set England on course for a 2-1 victory.
His goal came in his 81st match after missing the chance in the 80th when he missed a penalty against France.
The striker sparked great emotion by scoring in Naples, a goal that put England 2-0 up in their first Euro 2024 qualifier.
Alan Shearer, Steven Gerrard and Gary Lineker were among the other former England stars who congratulated Kane online.

England captain Kane converted a first-half penalty to score his 54th goal for England.
“Congratulations to Harry Kane on becoming England’s all-time top goalscorer,” Rooney began.

Said ‘Kane’ Ferdinand with his own applause emoji, reiterating the praise for the striker.

Kane made his England debut in 2015 as a substitute for Rooney against Lithuania
Meanwhile, Gerrard, speaking on Channel 4, described Kane as one of the best strikers in the world.
He said: ‘Incredible moment, ironically coming in the form of a penalty. He was so determined to make it up to the young lady. I’m very happy for him, congratulations.
His teammates have been through it with him. He is one of the best penalty takers in the world.
You are talking about greatness, one of the best nines in the world and that is why in each transfer window he leads the conversations. Maybe it’s time for me to move on.
Kane’s teammates surrounded him after he scored to make it 2-0 England on the night.
Jill Scott and Joe Cole, also speaking on Channel 4, made reference to the miss against France at the World Cup.
“I think from hearing it before we all survived the failure and have seen the resilience, well done Harry.” said scott
“It’s redemption,” Cole added. You can’t help but admire and respect him. He is alone now. What a moment!
England won the game 2-1 to start their qualifying campaign off to a positive start.
