Wayne Rooney has praised Bruno Fernandes for his ‘incredible’ assist during the FA Cup final after the Portuguese midfielder set up Kobbie Mainoo for Manchester United’s second goal against Manchester City.
United shocked Pep Guardiola’s champions by taking a commanding 2-0 lead in the first half, with Alejandro Garnacho taking advantage of a defensive mix-up between Josko Gvardiol and Ederson to fire the ball into an open goal.
Just nine minutes later the Red Devils doubled their lead, with Garnacho feeding the ball to Fernandes just on the edge of the penalty area. The Portuguese midfielder had plenty of time to put away a goal, but instead he seemingly produced a sensational no-look pass to Kobbie Mainoo on the left side of the penalty area.
The young star, who was named in Gareth Southgate’s provisional England squad for Euro 2024 last week, curled the ball beautifully around Ederson in the bottom right corner to give Erik ten Hag’s side a 2-0 lead.
Joined by online supporters, Rooney praised Fernandes’ moment of genius in a chat with the BBC.
‘The second goal is an incredible goal. Bruno’s pass [Fernandes] is unbelievable,” Rooney said.

Another praised the United captain for choosing not to take a shot and instead making the pass: “That pass from Bruno Fernandes to pass it to Mainoo and not take a shot, wowowowow.”
One supporter wondered why United fans are so critical of the midfielder, writing: ‘How do Manchester United fans vilify Bruno Fernandes, he is by far their best player, what an assist.’
