Wayne Rooney is “disappointed and frustrated” at being left in the dark by DC United about a new contract, with his current contract expiring in December.

Rooney wants to stay in Washington, but after contacting the club to initiate talks earlier this year, he has heard nothing back.

He told the Washington Post: ‘I am slightly disappointed and frustrated that there has been no contact for two months.

“We asked about a new deal. We can sit down and talk about it. We haven’t heard back.

“Anyway, I can handle whatever the situation is. I was hoping we would have talked about it anyway. That has not been the case.

“We have asked to sit down and speak as planning for next season has to go ahead. So two months ago we asked where it all stood: are we moving forward or not moving forward – if that’s the case from their point of view – and we haven’t heard back yet.

“That’s frustrating because anyway, I’d rather know what the plan is because we have to make plans for next season. We need to do it sooner rather than later. The fact that we haven’t heard anything yet probably indicates one thing, but I’m sure they’ll have their reasons for that. So I’ll just wait.’

Rooney spoke before United beat the Chicago Fire 4-0 on Saturday night to finish ninth in the Eastern Conference, the final play-off spot.

He lives in the United States without his wife Colleen and their four sons, but Rooney insists it’s manageable.

“Of course you miss the kids and your wife, but it’s been as good as it gets,” he said. ‘I’m settled here. The family is settled at home. It hasn’t been a problem at all.’

But for now, Rooney needs to stay focused on his team’s playoffs. There are still seven games of the regular season to go and United have none other than Lionel Messi and Inter Miami in hot pursuit.

United, who are in the ninth and final play-off position, have 33 points from 27 games, while Miami are 11 points behind but have played three fewer games.

But it means an improvement for United: the team finished last season in last place in the Eastern Conference.
