Wayne Carey threatens to NEVER watch another game of footy if the AFL makes one controversial decision

AFL great Wayne Carey has threatened to never watch another football match and is adamant he will ‘jump ship’ if Essendon’s Peter Wright is banned at the tribunal on Tuesday night.

It follows that 27-year-old Wright was charged with rough conduct for his punch on Sydney’s Harry Cunningham at the SCG on Saturday evening.

The bombers fly forward is facing a long-term ban along with his own quick hit assessed as careless behavior, serious impact and high contact.

Carey was in disbelief that Wright would appear before a tribunal hearing – and made his feelings abundantly clear about his The Truth Hurts podcast.

“Weak as p**s, straight away, for the AFL, whoever decided that was sent straight to the tribunal, that’s just nonsense and wrong,” fumed the dual premiership player with the Kangaroos.

“I am prepared to say that if Peter Wright is suspended, whatever weeks he gets, I will not be watching an AFL football match. I’m ready. I’m jumping ship.

“I would say to everyone, if we want this game to look anything like what it should look like, he can attack that foot and he can protect himself.

“They reached the base at the same time. Peter twisted his body to protect himself. If he doesn’t turn his body, they’ll both be hurt. This is what our game is about. You get to attack the footy like he did.

‘It’s just going too far for me now. I won’t be watching footy for as long as he gets weeks. I’m not going to watch it while he’s out of the game.’

Carey added a subsequent ban for Wright that would change players’ decision-making on the field.

“Players will be terrified to even go hard on the foot,” he said.

“They’ll walk around on their toes and not even want to attack the foot. Is that what we want this game to be?’

It also follows Sydney Swans star Tom Papley as he criticizes Essendon for their off-ball tactics during their spiteful 30-point win on home soil.

‘They (Bombers) were quite good early, their pressing is good. They are chasing us a bit, but we are staying hard on the ball,” he told Channel Seven at half-time.

“They’re trying to come after us, it’s all off the ball. We’re just worried about the ball, we’ll stay hard in the game and get the job done.”

Meanwhile, young Essendon player Archie Perkins has backed his teammate Wright and wondered what other players would do in the same situation.

Swans defender Cunningham suffered a concussion and received help from the field after the collision early in the first quarter.

“He’s a very honest player and I think any player in his position this weekend, when he takes the ball, he doesn’t know what decision other players would make,” Perkins told reporters.

‘He will be dealt with by the tribunal, but we will certainly miss him if he gets weeks.’

Elaborating further on the matter, Perkins added: “I’m not sure what other players or what I would do in the same situation.

“It will be interesting to see what the tribunal says in the future.”

Wright’s bump came after Bombers coach Brad Scott spoke about the ‘Essendon edge’ he wants his team to develop.
