AFL great Wayne Carey has revealed he has given up alcohol indefinitely after discovering he was suffering from memory loss after drinking sessions.
Carey, 52, has not touched a drink in more than a fortnight and is now also a regular at his gym.
The double premiership winner with North Melbourne told Tony Sheahan further The Truth Hurts podcast that his lifestyle change comes at the perfect time.
“I’m holding myself accountable because there’s no end date to it,” Carey said.
“(Previously) I would go to meetings on Fridays, and sit down and have lunch… I would have a few beers and be at an important lunch, whether it was work or other things you have to do.
“(Then I) would wake up Saturday morning, and I would have been home by (Friday) dinner time, I can’t remember lunch. I don’t remember any conversations or details of that lunch.

“(So I decided it was) time to just go nuts and not drink a drop for a while.”
Carey then confirmed that he is already sleeping better, is a better father and “not taking as many anti-inflammatories,” which he takes after suffering serious injuries during his playing days.
In late 2022, Carey attracted a lot of unwanted headlines after a bag of white powder fell from his pocket at Perth’s Crown Casino.
The man affectionately known as ‘Duck’ to footy fans was convinced the Ziploc bag contained crushed anti-inflammatory drugs he was taking to control pain from his injuries.
Western Australia Police investigated the matter and did not lay charges against Carey.

In August last year, Carey and TikTok star Catie O’Neill called time on their relationship.
‘The King’ then stunned many footy fans last October after bizarrely confirming how many times he had slept with Kelli Stevens – the wife of his former teammate Anthony Stevens.
When the scandal unfolded in 2002, it rocked the sport and saw North Melbourne great Carey leave the club in disgrace and join the Adelaide Crows.
The affair also destroyed Carey and Stevens’ longstanding friendship, both on and off the field.
