Wayne Bridge is praised by fans for his ‘dignity’ and ‘doing the right thing’ after dropping out of KSI fight over ‘cringey’ X-rated John Terry jibe

Wayne Bridge has received a lot of support from fans after withdrawing from a fight against YouTuber KSI due to his jokes about John Terry.

The former footballer, 44, claimed the star had ‘crossed a line’ by making comments about his ex-girlfriend Vanessa Perroncel’s alleged affair with John.

The ex-Chelsea defender was due to fight KSI in Manchester on March 29, but dramatically pulled out just two days later in a statement posted on Monday.

Boxing fans have defended Wayne as they called KSI’s comments ‘cringey’ and applauded Wayne for his ‘dignity’ and ‘doing the right thing’.

When they went to

‘I don’t like this maverick stuff, but hats off to Wayne Bridge. Some things just don’t need to be said! It was cringey AF and KSI is a huge t**’; ‘What KSI said to Wayne Bridge was so bad, Bridge was so humble and didn’t deserve such treatment’;

‘Embarrassing of KSI, no class and very bad taste. I was shocked when I saw this. Wayne Bridge has certainly done the right thing here’; ‘Wayne Bridge showed enormous dignity, he is someone children can look up to…’

“KSI missed an opportunity to be a role model for children. It takes years to really build respect and he just lost everything he had. Read that sledding requires intellect, perhaps the most important point here…

‘Catching up on the YouTuber boxing scene. I think KSI’s own goal is to, as he did with Wayne, talk about his ex-wife with John Terry and have the audience chant her name. Wayne Bridge has kids who watched that’;

‘I’m a big believer that you should never involve a man’s family life in what you do in life. Even if it’s good or bad. Let’s see how this one turns out! Bunch.’

Fair enough, the guy wanted to fight, but instead of being abused, how on earth can KSI have a fight with Wayne Bridge? What a pathetic person’; ‘There isn’t a single YouTuber/TikToker who knows about it.

‘Fair play to the retirement of Wayne Bridge, a real guy who refuses to be dragged into the pits by the likes of KSI whose weird man, really weird’; ‘Good for him. Wayne Bridge is a ‘real’ man;

“I’m glad Wayne Bridge canceled this fight. I’m pretty sure you’ve done a documentary and a mental health campaign and then you use someone’s personal tragedy to form a chant to humiliate them. It’s hypocrisy, you should and should be better than this…

“Wayne Bridge is withdrawing from the KSI fight due to the comments KSI has made regarding the John Terry situation. Thank God KSI looks like the clown now’; “What KSI said to Wayne Bridge was so bad. Bridge was so modest and didn’t deserve that treatment.’

During an in-ring confrontation with Wayne, KSI said, “Aren’t you the guy who made John Terry hit your ex?” Bridge replied, “You want to go there right away, don’t you?”

“I’m pretty sure that’s what you’re known for,” KSI added, before riling up the crowd and starting a chant that read, “Vanessa woah, Vanessa woah,” referring to Bridge’s ex-girlfriend Vanessa Perroncel.

KSI then added X-rated words to his song that directly referenced John and Wayne’s former partner.

Following the comments, Wayne announced that he wants to protect his family from such comments and will seek a new challenge in the ring later.

The statement read: “I’m sure many of you saw what happened on Saturday night at the Misfits Boxing event.

‘First of all, I think it is important that I explain why I accept the fight. I always like to challenge myself. This felt like a good opportunity to compete against an interesting opponent on a big stage.

‘I have always loved boxing as part of my daily training routine. I was fully prepared to train hard and have fun. Of course I expected some criticism, but I feel like what was said on Saturday crossed a line.

“These are very personal comments that impact mine and other families involved in the situation. I am a family man first and my priority is to protect them.

‘My opponent is someone that many children look up to, including my children. I hope he will look back on this differently one day. Personally, I don’t want to be involved in these exchanges. On March 29th I will no longer fight.

‘I’m still looking forward to my next big challenge and have some exciting things in store for 2025. Thanks for all the love. The support was overwhelming.

‘I want my friends and family to know how special they are. Deep down I know this is the right thing to do.”

Wayne’s relationship with Vanessa broke down over allegations that she had an affair with former Blues and England captain John, who was Wayne’s teammate at the time.

John and Wayne were later grilled about the situation by rival supporters and the pair are no longer friends due to the incident.

Vanessa has vehemently denied the allegations, which state the affair took place in 2009, and previously claimed she had legal documents to prove her innocence.

Wayne has fought before, beating Made in Chelsea star Spencer Matthews in a charity fight seven years ago.

He hung up his boots in 2014 after a career that saw him win the Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup with Chelsea.

Wayne also played for Southampton, Fulham, West Ham, Sunderland and Brighton and collected 36 caps for England. Those who know him say he is still in top condition.
