Activision has given us our first look at Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer in a new trailer.
The new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 clip, revealed during the Call of Duty Next livestream, gives us a first look at several new features of the game in action. The game’s Gunsmith weapon modifier has been revamped, water is now a focus of the game, and even player movements have been revamped with new toys, such as hanging a ledge.
Modern Warfare 2’s multiplayer design director Geoff Smith said the team has been looking closely at the various “player behaviors” to bring out the multiplayer experience of the next Call of Duty. They’ve added a whole bunch of new mechanics to that, building on previous Call of Duty games and adding totally new ideas.
You can watch the trailer below to see it all for yourself. You can also sign up for the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 beta now.
Card
Multiplayer design director Geoff Smith said Modern Warfare 2’s 6v6 maps have been refined for a sleeker experience. Compared to Modern Warfare 2019, they are a bit “simpler” and “sophisticated” but also play very fast.
We’ve seen two. Sarrif Bay is a fishing village full of boats and water – lots of swimming. Also expect a lot of ledge hanging on the rooftops. They will provide snipers with a natural home
Mercado Las Almas is a Mexican street market that creates a sleek urban environment. The map will play super fast with lots of action led to the main street. Flanks will be extra important here.
Game modes
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 introduces a new Invasion game mode. Although it is a game mode for 20v20 players, each side will get an extra 20 AI to help them. It is described as a “high action mode” but also “chill” that allows you to play to your own style. The Ai is also reactive. They will hunt you if you stay put, camping on a roof.
There will also be a new 6v6 mode. Prisoner Rescue is an attack defense mode. The defenders have two prisoners who need to be protected. The attackers must take both prisoners, pick them up and exfiltrate from the map. Attackers get a radar sweep when they have the prisoner, which gives them an advantage. The defenders also lose their objective marker on the prisoners, so they need to find them before the attackers leave.
Water
Joseph Cicot, Modern Warfare 2’s co-design director of multiplayer Joseph Cicot, said water is more important than ever in Call of Duty. While some environmental design has been added in previous games, such as frozen lakes in Warzone, the “aquatic experience” will be essential to Modern Warfare 2.
You must use bodies of water as cover to flee enemy fire, jump into lakes to escape enemies and be careful to dodge boats and floating mines. Only certain weapons work underwater, so you’ll have to rely on your sidearm instead of your primary weapon. But even they will feel different underwater.
Movement
Modern Warfare 2 offers many new ways to move around the maps. Instead of just walking or running through the hallways, you snoop around the site dodging enemy fire.
“Fluid movement is super important to us,” Cicot said. You can slide and climb obstacles, but you can now also hang from a ledge while unloading your gun. The idea is to give yourself more protection against incoming fire.
That should make for some pretty cinematic moments. Activision says you can duck out windows to escape grenades, or peek around corners to take out enemies in tactical firefights.
Gunsmith 2.0
Call of Duty’s weapon customization system has undergone a major overhaul. Attachments are now shared across all weapons, meaning you can switch paraphernalia faster, without having to sharpen each weapon. The idea is to make weapons more personal to you, as you equip them with exactly the attachments you want.
As you’d expect, there’s a ton of attachments to choose from. You can swap muzzles, visors, rear handle, magazine, handles, receiver and more. It should provide a deeper Gunsmith system suitable for a wider variety of players.
