Watch Alan Shearer’s hilarious reaction to getting a question about his own career wrong in sports quiz – leaving his team-mates in stitches

  • Shearer took part in Betfair’s ‘Only Bettor’ and was captain of the football team
  • They competed against the racing team, with Rachel Blackmore and Paul Nicholls
  • Listen to It all starts! Jack Grealish shouldn’t be allowed to drift away from Man City… he will be sold this summer if things don’t change

Alan Shearer responded hilariously during one Honestly quiz in a round about his own career when he got a question wrong.

The all-time Premier League top scorer joined the ‘football team’ for the quiz, which was held to celebrate Christmas, and had footballer turned broadcaster Alan McInally and presenter Abigail Davies in his team.

They took on the ‘racing team’, captained by Rachael Blackmore and also featuring 14-time champion trainer Paul Nicholls and Sky Sports Racing presenter Vanessa Ryle.

Host Kevin Hatchard put the quizzers to the test in five rounds of sports trivia: at the buzzer, hedge your bets, the captain’s challenge, go big or go home and the final furlong.

The captain’s challenge involved Shearer answering questions about his own career, but he caused some hilarious reactions when he got something wrong.

The highlight of the round was when he was asked about his time at Blackburn, and in particular playing in the Champions League.

Shearer was asked who was the only Premier League player to win the Golden Boot more times, and he rightly chose Thierry Henry.

He was then asked who was moving to Southampton from Blackburn as part of his move, and he went straight for David Speedie.

The Match of the Day pundit then named John Lukic as the goalkeeper against whom he scored a hat-trick on his Southampton debut, but came up short when asked who he scored against in the 1994/95 Champions League for Blackburn.

After a short break, Shearer nervously suggested Heerenveen, and was corrected with Rosenborg.

The fellow competitors were then left in the lurch when the ex-striker shouted: ‘B****cks!’ before continuing.

Shearer got all the other questions right, except that Moises Caicedo was the record transfer between two British clubs, which he passed on.

Speaking about the quiz, Shearer said: “There’s nothing like a good quiz at Christmas, and it was great to lead the team for Betfair’s Christmas Quizzing… Only Bettor. I won’t spoil it for the people watching, but some of those questions were a lot harder than we thought.

“It’s fair game for the Betfair racing team too, they know what they’re talking about.”
