Wasps RFC has been suspended from the Gallagher Premiership and the Premiership Rugby Cup for the remainder of the 22/23 season, confirmed in a statement from the RFU.
Financial problems at the top English side forced Wasps into administration on October 17, with 167 players and club staff of the six-time Premiership champions being fired.
Their season-long suspension means they will have to join the English Championship next season, but will only be able to compete in professional rugby if suitable investment from new buyers is found.

The anticipated announcement was confirmed in a statement from England’s rugby regulatory body, which read:

The Coventry-based Union side has been removed from the Gallagher Premiership
“All potential investors and management require due diligence and approvals from the RFU and PRL. A condition of a potential deal is a requirement for the payment of all rugby creditors.
“The decision also gives assurance to PRL and Premiership rugby clubs to protect the integrity of Gallagher Premiership Rugby and enable clubs and their teams to plan for the remainder of the season.”
The RFU’s move to remove Wasps from the Premiership means the league has now been reduced to just 11 teams, with the side following the same path taken by Worcester Warriors earlier in the season.
Worcester was banned from playing competitive matches after accumulating £25 million in debt and was subsequently also placed under administration.
