Washington state supermarket chain calls on customers to donate to ‘DEI awareness’ at checkout

A supermarket chain in Washington state is calling on customers to donate to “DEI awareness” during checkout.

Photos obtained by Fox news show a self-checkout screen at a Haggen Food and Pharmacy — a chain owned by supermarket giant Albertson’s — and ask customers, “Would you like to donate to advocate for DEI awareness?”

It suggests that customers add a donation of $1, $3, $5, or some other amount to their total, but they can also opt out.

Behind the self-checkout kiosk was also a sign advertising Haggen’s charity – the Haggen Foundation – telling customers that they can donate at “any register” from June 14 through August 8 to “support organizations that make positive implement social changes to ensure that all community members live healthy and fully inclusive lives.’

But their efforts come just weeks after retail giant Target came under fire for its support of an LGBTQIA+ group supporting children secretly changing gender and another trying to shut down Mount Rushmore.

According to the Haggen Foundation’s website, donations made under the DEI promptly support charities such as the American Cancer Society, as well as others who support people with intellectual disabilities, such as Chinook Enterprises and Faces Northwest.

But it also benefits charities that support awakening policies, such as the Northwest Justice Project, which seeks to “combat structural and racial inequalities to [the] long-term well-being of low-income individuals, families, and communities in Washington State.”

The Northwest Justice Project states on its website, “As a dynamic law firm statewide, we pursue our mission through legal advice and representation, community partnerships, and education to empower clients and fight injustice in all its forms.”

“NJP endorses and has signed the Race Equity and Justice Initiative Principles and Commitments,” it adds.

Last year, the Haggen Foundation also supported other awakening organizations such as the Northwest Immigrants Rights Project and Empower Next Generations.

The Northwest Immigrants Rights Project seeks to “undo systemic oppression,” according to its website.

“We are bound together by our common humanity, by global forces that influence our lives, and by historical patterns of oppression, discrimination and inequality,” the “mission” page says.

“If society is to be just and whole, we must work together to undo the many forms of systemic oppression.”

Empower Next Generations, meanwhile, lists its three core values as ‘social justice, cultural diversity’ [and] inclusion.’

“It is our social responsibility to each other to provide equitable access to resources, information, technology, financial and social capital in a fair, safe and secure manner.”

When asked by DailyMail.com whether it believes Haggen should support organizations like this, a spokesperson apparently dodged the question, instead praising the less controversial organizations that Haggen funds.

“The fundraising campaign currently underway in Washington’s Haggen will benefit nonprofits such as the Down Syndrome Center of Puget Sound, Special Olympics Washington, Disability Rights Washington, National Multiple Sclerosis Society and the American Cancer Society.”

The decision to hold this fundraising campaign comes just weeks after it was revealed that Target has been funding a radical education group pushing for wakeful school policies despite severe backlash over the release of the LGBTQ Pride product.

The brand says it is “proud” to partner with the K-12 education group GLSEN, which is pressuring school boards to secretly transfer children without parental consent and to make sexually explicit books available in classrooms.

It also includes instructions for teachers on how to modify classes such as math and science to be “more inclusive of trans and non-binary identities,” including using “they/they” pronouns in lesson plans, reports Fox news.

“GLSEN is leading the movement in creating affirming… and anti-racist spaces for LGBTQIA+ students,” said Target. ‘We are proud of more than 10 years of cooperation with GLSEN and continue to support their mission.’

The company also funded the NDN Collective in 2022, an Indigenous-led organization dedicated to building Indigenous power, according to their website.

The NDN Collective is calling for the sovereign land where Mount Rushmore is located to be returned to the Lakota people.

It also supports Israel opening up to those who identify as Palestinian refugees, and reportedly maintains “hostile views” of the military as they seek to “demilitarize” the United States.

“The closure of Mount Rushmore, the return of that land and all public lands in the Black Hills, South Dakota, is our most important battle,” NDN said of its LANDBACK campaign.

Mount Rushmore is not only in the heart of the sacred Black Hills, but is also an international symbol of white supremacy and colonization. To really dismantle white supremacy and systems of oppression, we need to go back to the roots. Which means for us that the indigenous lands are returned to indigenous hands.’

As for the US military, the NDN has said that “violence is fundamental for the US to maintain its presence.”

‘[T]The US military is explicitly out to take land away from communities around the world and use their presence on their land to further their own agenda for the residents of that area,” it said.

“Violence is fundamental for the US to maintain its presence, and the military is how they establish national and international dominance wherever they are.”

The NDN added, “However, the purpose of these informal militias was not to preserve the police or protect civilians, but to clear the country of as many natives as possible by indiscriminate killing and capturing runaway enslaved Africans.”
