Wannabe DJ sparks outrage by advertising someone ‘not white and ‘sex positive’ to share a houseboat – paying £420 a month for a room so small it can barely fit a single bed
- Henry White was hunting for a person to live on a barge in Deptford Creek, London
- But his ad was promptly removed from Facebook after being labeled “mean.”
An aspiring DJ has sparked outrage by posting a room-sharing ad asking someone who is “not white” and “sex-positive” to share a houseboat.
The privately educated Henry White was also criticized for asking for a new tenant who would pay £420 a month for a room so small it’s barely big enough for a single bed.
The house-sharing ad was placed on a Facebook group called the Southeast London Housemate Co-op, which has more than 60,000 members.
But within hours of being seen by others on social media, it was taken down following a flurry of complaints criticizing the ad as “despicable” and “discriminatory.”
One woman wrote: ‘I can’t even participate. Everything about this post is mean. From the racism to the absolutely ethical nature of renting out a tiny cardboard box on the water for £420 plus slave labour.’

In the lengthy ad, accompanied by photos of the room to rent, White, 27, said he and two others live on a barge called ‘Luna’ in Deptford Creek, southeast London.
He wrote, “Sex-positive, queer household co-op looking for people who aren’t white to become a fourth member.
“We are looking for someone who is 21+, non-white, and interested in helping with the day-to-day maintenance of the boat, setting up the co-op, and getting the creek community involved.”
Describing those already living in the shared space, he added, “There are currently two white and one black person living on the boat.
“It’s a beautiful and unique space where we share food, resources and space. We are looking for someone who wants to participate in this atmosphere’.
Photos accompanying the ad show a single wooden slatted frame crammed between two walls. There is a single window and a radiator with two shelves attached to one of the walls.
Other photos show a small bathroom and kitchen.

The description further reveals that the advertised space used to be two rooms but has now been converted into one and that the former occupant had left many of his personal belongings behind which were being cleared away.”
The monthly rent was £420 with a deposit of the same amount.

His parents live in a £1.1 million house in Acton West, London, with his father Mark, a company executive.
Other members of the Facebook group who complained said the dingy space being advertised was legally incapable of advertising because it was so small.
Geri Matt wrote: ‘It is illegal to discriminate in this way. Plus to rent a room to 1 person the size must be 6.51 m2 or 60 square feet which is approximately 6 ft by 11 ft or 8 ft by 8 ft.’
White could not be reached for comment.
