Walmart to shut three more stores in weeks as total for 2024 hits six (on the back of closing 23 last year) – is YOUR local shop affected?

  • Three have already closed in February: two around San Diego and one in Ohio
  • Three more Walmart stores will close over the next four weeks
  • The six closures for Walmart this year follow the closure of 23 last year

Walmart is closing three more stores, bringing the total number of closures announced so far for 2024 to six.

Bosses said the stores β€” two in California and one in Maryland β€” weren’t making enough money. After the shuttering, two more were built in California and one in Ohio.

Walmart is the latest to announce store closures this year. Dollar Tree will close 1,000, Macy’s 150 – a third of the total – and drugstore Rite Aid 77.

The six closures for Walmart this year follow the closure of 23 last year.

Below, DailyMail.com lists both this year’s and last year’s closures – and here’s a map showing where they are in the US.

The store in a shopping center in Towson, Maryland will close on April 5 after twenty years.

The last of the six announced so far for closure in 2024 is a store in the Sacramento area. The Granite Bay Neighborhood Market closes on April 12.

Supercenters, which employ about 300 people in about 182,000 square feet, are the standard large Walmart stores that sell everything from groceries to electronics and home furnishings.

Walmart Neighborhood Markets β€” which employs about 95 people and covers 38,000 square feet β€” is smaller. They focus on food, household items and normally have a pharmacy.

Regarding the latest closures, a Walmart spokesperson told DailyMail.com: β€œWe have more than 5,000 Walmart stores and Neighborhood Markets across the U.S., and unfortunately some are not meeting our financial expectations.

β€œWhile our underlying businesses are strong, these stores have not performed as well as we had hoped.

β€œPlease note that these decisions were not taken lightly and were made after a thorough review process.”

Last year, Walmart’s total number of stores fell by 102, from 4,717 in January 2023 to 4,615 a year later.

That’s because Walmart – in addition to the 23 standard store closures – has sold a total of 79 Moosejaw and Bonobos locations following the sale of the two retailers.

Despite the closures, Walmart has pledged to open 150 new stores over the next five years.

And it also said it would renew 650 stores in 47 states this year.

Meanwhile, Walmart has developed new camera technology that is dramatically changing checkouts.

This allows customers to scan and pay for groceries with an app on their phone and immediately walk out.

The retailer is first introducing the new checkouts at Sam’s Club, rival to Walmart-owned Costco.

If it proves successful, the technology could be rolled out more widely to Walmart-branded stores instead of just Sam’s Club.

How retailers roll out new store concepts

Sam’s Club β€” Walmart-owned rival Costco β€” is using new camera technology that is dramatically changing its checkouts.

This allows customers to scan and pay for groceries using an app on their phone and immediately walk out.

Meanwhile, Whole Foods is launching stores for shoppers in a hurry – the new concept is a fraction of the size of regular stores and lets you pay with your hand using Amazon technology

And Costco announced plans to open a “showroom” style store for big-ticket items.
