Earlier this month, health officials announced a recall of popular candies sold in Walmart stores across the U.S. due to concerns about contamination with deadly bacteria.
Iowa-based Palmer Candy Company has voluntarily recalled its White Coated Confectionary Items after discovering they may have been contaminated with salmonella, a foodborne illness that infects 1.3 million Americans annually.
The FDA said the affected products — mixtures of snack foods such as pretzels, popcorn and chocolates — were distributed nationwide at Walmart, HyVee, Target and Dollar General stores.
The products were sold under various brand names, including Walmart’s Great Value
The potentially harmful candies are coated with a sugary coating that appears white and come in a variety of packaging, such as pouches, sachets and tubs.
They were also sent to distributors in the following states: Alabama, California, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.
No illnesses have been reported.
The candy in question was sold under brand names such as Palmer Candy, Great Value, Casey’s and Every True Tiger – a University of Missouri brand.
