George North underwent cheekbone surgery on Wednesday but will be fit to start the Six Nations in what is a big boost for New Wales head coach Warren Gatland.

Giant center North took a bad hit playing for the Ospreys against Leicester in the Champions League last Sunday and left the field with a bloody face.

He underwent surgery to fix the problem this week, but is only expected to be out for a couple of weeks.

Gatland, who has returned to his role as Wales boss following the sacking of Wayne Pivac, knows North well and will see him as a central figure in a World Cup year.

“He had surgery and it went very well,” Ospreys head coach Toby Booth said of North.

“He’ll be fine within two to three weeks, which is great. I certainly think that in the New Year it will be fine, so it will be good for us.

‘Any injury to the face is always a concern, but he is fine. He has a nice shiny black eye.

“Other than that, he’s pretty upbeat, so it probably says a lot about how he feels.”
