Waitara, New Zealand: Heartless car thief dumps a BABY on the side of the road after stealing a vehicle with a child inside

Shocking footage has emerged of a man allegedly dumping a baby on the street after unknowingly stealing a car with the child in the back.

Police were called to a shopping center in Waitara, on the west coast of New Zealand’s North Island, at around 12.10am on Friday after reports of a stolen vehicle.

The owner of the silver Peugeot station wagon had only just gotten out of the car when a man got in and drove away with the baby still in the back, local police said.

Security footage from the corner of Queen and Cameron Streets showed a man getting out of the still-moving car and pulling the baby from the backseat.

He then left the child on the road, jumped back behind the wheel and took off. The child was later found unharmed.

The Peugeot was found on Monday morning on the corner of Henui and Mclean Streets, in neighboring New Plymouth.

Police allege the car drove ‘all over’ Taranaki that weekend, the region including Waitara and New Plymouth.

An associate of the driver was arrested and taken into custody.

Police are still searching for the alleged car thief and have appealed for information from the public.

Anyone who has seen the car or has information about the investigation is asked to contact police.
