Western Australia on cyclone alert alert as a week of wild weather continues
A cyclone warning has been issued as two tropical lows threaten to intensify as they move towards Australia.
Gale-force winds and heavy rain are forecast for the coasts of Western Australia, Pilbara and Kimberley over the coming days.
A tropical cyclone could develop as early as Sunday, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.
Meteorologists are ‘increasingly confident’ that tropical low 11U will intensify with a 70 chance of developing into a tropical cyclone early next week.
The chance of the other tropical low, called 10U, turning into a cyclone is less than five percent.
The system is expected to spread across western and southwestern WA, paralleling the coast in offshore waters.
Any cyclone that forms could become a tropical three-cyclone, capable of producing winds of 125 miles per hour that will leave a trail of destruction in its wake, including fallen trees, building damage and structural damage.
Even if the cyclone does not develop, heavy rains and strong winds will still devastate the northwest part of the state.
Two tropical lows forming off the coast of Western Australia could produce a cyclone on Sunday, the Bureau of Meteorology warned
BOM senior meteorologist Joey Rawson said the system is likely to remain offshore, but could not rule out the chance of it making landfall.
‘There is more and more confidence in that [a cyclone will develop]potentially bringing windy conditions and heavy rainfall to the Pilbara coast,” Mr Rawson said told 7News.
‘Although the system is likely to remain offshore of the Pilbara coast, there is a small chance it may make landfall somewhere along the Pilbara coast.
“The key for the community is to be prepared, especially in the Pilbara, and to keep an eye on both the Bureau and EmergencyWA websites.”
A strong wind warning was issued for much of the WA coast on Friday, including the West Kimberley, Ningaloo, Gascoyne, Bunbury, Leeuwin, Albany, Esperance and Eucla.
Perth is in for a wet weekend with forecasts of up to 10mm on Friday and another 30mm on Saturday.
It comes after a week of wild weather devastated much of Australia’s east coast.
