W Hotel Sydney opening: See inside the city’s most eye-catching new luxury hotel as the bold design by the harbour finally opens after pandemic delays

The wait for one of the world’s leading design hotel chains to open a branch in Sydney is finally over.

In the highly anticipated opening of W Sydney on the harbor waterfront overlooking Darling Harbour, the luxury hotel will officially open its doors on Thursday 12 October.

Located at 31 Wheat Road in Sydney, the uniquely designed building – compared to a wave or a glass ‘spaceship’ – will offer 588 rooms, neatly wedged in the middle of the Western Distributor Viaduct, one of the CBD’s busiest junctions.

The striking building, which cost a billion dollars to build, is also equipped with a rooftop bar, a 24-hour restaurant and leisure facilities including a spa and gym.

Guests are treated to spectacular harbor views from iconic waterfront locations such as the popular King Street Warf and Barangaroo.

Some suites also offer views of the city skyline.

The building’s glass exterior and oddly shaped curve make the comparison with spaceships even clearer.

The lavishly appointed rooms and suites will cost guests hundreds of dollars for an overnight stay.

Visitors can expect to pay between $401 and $509 per night for a stay at the W.

Suites with one- and two-bedroom options cost between $665 and as much as $2,909 per night.

Stephen Crawley, co-founder of London-based interior design firm Bowler James Brindley, was tasked with planning the hotel’s interior aesthetic.

Mr. Crawley told it The Australian The interior of the hotel had to reflect the beautiful exterior of the building.

“The inside should yield as much as the outside,” he said.

“The last thing you want is to be disappointed.”

Mr Crawley praised the hotel as a structure that could only be built in very few places – with the right decor to match its impressive presence.

“This is a superyacht in the sky,” he said.

Luxury developer Greaton began plans to build the facility in 2016.

Renowned hotel and resort consortium Marriot, owner of W Hotels, boldly stated in 2018 that the property would be open in Sydney by 2020.

After the collapse of the builders and the economic devastation caused by the Covid pandemic for more than two years, the hotel will be open again in less than a week.

W-hotels also operate in Melbourne and Brisbane.
