The idea of having sex in this world may be off-putting to many, but one virtual reality expert believes people are “tending to get comfortable”, just as they did with dating apps.
Sam Hall, managing director of mixed reality rooms, predicts that within 10 years, people from all walks of life will be wearing virtual reality headsets to avoid the effort or risks that can be associated with in-person sex.
He also suggested that virtual reality headsets would become more accessible in the next decade, with porn apps and websites phasing out just as the two did with magazines.
“When this happens, we will reach a point where VR sex toys and ‘multi-sensory’ VR with scents will become the new normal,” Hall said.
The idea of having sex in this world may be off-putting to many, but one virtual reality expert believes people are “tending to get comfortable”, just as they did with dating apps.
“Immersive experiences are compelling, very well simulated images, which, when combined with haptic technology, such as sex toys that respond to inputs and produce physical outcomes, will provide an experience close enough to the real thing,” Hall said.
“Connected sex toys will make virtual reality sex ‘real’.”
Hall suggested that with the advent of virtual reality headsets will come accessories — such as connected sex toys.
“I expect there will be a more integrated connection between Bluetooth sex toys that use haptic technology and virtual reality headsets,” he said.
Hall warned that the technology carries “significant ethical concerns” regarding consent.
This is due to the threat of using photos of people or virtual versions of them without their consent, among other things.
A 2017 report shared similar concerns, noting that VR porn could lead to unrealistic expectations of the sexual experience or could have more extreme effects by allowing some to “cross the line” and engage in violent and offensive content.
Multi-sensory virtual reality will add smells and touch
Metaverse sex will soon become the “norm” one expert has predicted
Multi-sensory virtual reality, which uses technology to immerse people in trans experiences complete with sight, sound, touch, smell and taste, will make trans sex “the norm,” Hall said.
“We can expect multi-sensory VR sex to become the norm for most people in technologically advanced areas,” he continued.
“We believe the future of the sex metaverse will be a combination of virtual reality headsets combined with sex toys that can be linked using already existing technology, such as Bluetooth, to help create a fully immersive experience.”
While “smelling” in the virtual world sounds like science fiction right now, researchers in Sweden developed a device in 2022 that sends scents to your nose while playing video games in virtual reality.
It contains liquid scents that are directed to the nostrils at different times during gameplay while wearing the headset.
The system links “bodily odors to an artificial virtual reality environment” and brings the “Smell-O-Vision” concept into the 21st century.
Smell-O-Vision is a system created by Swiss professor Hans Loeb in 1960 to release scents to an audience while watching a movie.
People can have sex anywhere
Hall said the metaverse will take people out of their homes when it comes to sex, enabling them to communicate in different simulated locations.
“The Metaverse has no limits and will enable people to live out all their sexual fantasies,” he continued.
“It makes it easier for people to have virtual sex in different locations around the world, real or imagined, in private or public, and perhaps even in front of a virtual, simulated or human audience.”
Single men can benefit more than others
Hall Studies said It shows that a small number of men (10-20 percent) get a majority of women (80-90 percent) – and this is due to dating apps that make it easier to choose between different partners.
The Metaverse will “balance this out” and will serve as an alternative outlet for those struggling to find sexual partners.
“They can be whoever they want to be in these virtual and theoretical worlds, and there will be no limits to the experiences they can have,” Hall said.
Do I think this is good for us as humans? No, but at the same time, sex is a basic human desire, and people will need an outlet to express themselves.
How quickly does this happen?
People are already finding romance in the metaverse, Hall said, and it will begin to develop once technologies like virtual reality, metaverse spaces and sex games intersect.
“People are already using multiplayer online games and simulations that simulate sex virtually with their partners and strangers,” he explained.
“There are sex toys (devices) that can be operated remotely, but to my knowledge, there is not much functional overlap between these technologies yet.”
