Vincent Kompany and Michael Carrick nominated for Championship best manager prize

Promotion-winning Burnley boss Vincent Kompany is joined by Middlesbrough’s Michael Carrick and Coventry City’s Mark Robins on the shortlist for the Championship Manager of the Season award.

Influential Clarets midfielder Josh Brownhill has been nominated for the division’s best player award, but is up against Middlesbrough’s 26-goal striker Chuba Akpom and Coventry’s in-form Viktor Gyokeres.

The winners will be announced at the EFL Awards in London on April 23, as another exciting campaign comes to a close.

Kompany, 37, has changed Burnley’s fate after they were relegated from the Premier League 12 months ago.

They secured an immediate return to the top flight with a 2-1 victory over Middlesbrough on Friday night and remain on course for the Championship title plus a possible record number of points.

Following Monday’s 2-0 success against Sheffield United, a perfect run-in of six wins from six will see Burnley surpass Reading’s record Championship points tally of 106 from the 2005-06 season.

Former Manchester United and England midfielder Carrick, 41, has had a similar transformative effect on Middlesbrough in his first permanent managerial role.

They took over at the end of October with the club just one point above the relegation places and now look poised for a play-off place after pushing Sheffield United into second automatic promotion place.

Robins, 53, has Coventry chasing a play-off spot ahead of the season. Their fight back from two goals to a 2–2 draw with Watford on Easter Monday left them three points behind in sixth place.

The same trio of clubs are represented on the three-man shortlist for the Championship Player of the Season title.

Burnley midfielder Brownhill, 27, has contributed six goals and eight assists to help his team back to the Premier League after suffering the pain of relegation last season.

Boro striker Akpom, 27, is comfortably the Championship’s leading goalscorer this season, scoring his 26th of the season in Friday night’s defeat to Burnley.

Sweden’s 24-year-old striker Gyokeres scored 18 goals and assisted on a further nine to further Coventry’s play-off push this season.

The shortlist for the Young Player of the Season Championship included Bristol City’s Alex Scott, Middlesbrough’s Hayden Hackney and Sunderland’s Manchester United loanee Amad Diallo.

In League One, the Manager of the Season gong goes to Kieran McKenna from Ipswich, Steven Schumacher from Plymouth or Darren Moore from Sheffield Wednesday.

Someone will be disappointed in an exciting automatic promotion race where the leadership of the third division changes hands regularly.

On Monday, Wednesday returned to the top flight with a 3-0 win over Accrington Stanley as Plymouth lost at home to Lincoln and Ipswich were drawn at Cheltenham.

On Wednesday, midfielder Barry Bannan is in contention for the League One Player of the Season award, but faces stiff competition from Bristol Rovers’ Aaron Collins and Peterborough’s Jonson Clarke-Harris.

A promotion-chasing trio are shortlisted for League Two’s best manager: Richie Wellens at leaders Leyton Orient, Paul Simpson at Carlisle and Steve Evans at Stevenage.

Orient are eight points clear at the top and are on course for the title, despite losing two points to Harrogate on Easter Monday.

Northampton Town, Stockport County, Carlisle and Stevenage look poised to battle for the other two automatic promotion spots in the last few games.

The best player in League Two will be one of Andy Cook (Bradford City), Sam Hoskins (Northampton) or Carl Piergianni (Stevenage).

The winners will be announced on April 23 at a star-studded gala at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London.
