Villarreal are trying to sign Tottenham midfielder Tanguy Ndombele in a loan deal and are also interested him his team-mate Giovani Lo Celso.

Ndombele – who became the club’s record signing when he joined from Lyon in July 2019 for £63m – was sent back to his former club on loan for the 2021-2022 season.

Ndombele returned to Antonio Conte’s side for their pre-season campaign this summer but struggled to cement his place in the Italian manager’s fist XI.

The Italian manager has brought in six new players this summer – meaning competition for place is higher than ever.

Yves Bissouma, along with January purchase Rodrigo Bentancur, have effectively replaced Ndombele and Lo Celso in the squad.

Therefore, the midfielder’s future at the north London club remains up in the air and Villarreal are looking to take advantage.

However, Ndombele has hinted he would like to stay at Spurs as he thinks it would be ‘possible’ to be happy at Tottenham.

‘Yes, I think it’s possible to be happy at Tottenham,’ he told Media Carre, ‘Regardless of where you can go, you can be happy or unhappy.

‘We’ll see how things go during pre-season. I’m not putting any more pressure on myself than that.’

Reflecting on what may lie ahead for him, he went on to add: ‘What I want is to be happy, take pleasure in what I do, play, win, that’s all I want.’

Meanwhile, Conte previously admitted that Ndombele had ‘talent’ but insisted the midfielder had to ‘work much’ harder.

The Italian manager said: ‘For sure, Tanguy has the quality but at the same time he has to understand that there is a team and he has to play into the team. It means that it’s important to keep order and to do what the position is asking you to do.

‘We are working very hard with Tanguy – he has to work much more than the others because he has some talent but he has to put this talent into the team, for the best of the team, not for the single player.’

Villarreal are also interested in signing Lo Celso this summer as his future at the north London club remains uncertain.

Lo Celso was also sent out on loan at Lyon after failing to make the grade under the Italian manager.

The French side secured his services for a fee of £1.25million. They also had the option of buying him permanently for £54million but decided against it.
