Viktor Gyokeres has fueled speculation he could be reunited with Ruben Amorim at Manchester United after admitting his ambition is to play in the Premier League.

The Sweden international has starred for Sporting since moving to Portugal and is currently Europe’s most prolific goalscorer this season with 18 goals in all competitions.

With the arrival of Amorim as United’s newly appointed head coach in November, the 39-year-old took over the squad left in the chaos of Erik ten Hag and is still assessing the need for new recruitments.

His transformation project, which has turned Amorim Gyokeres – formerly of Coventry – into one of Europe’s best goalscorers, has led to United fans calling for the striker to move to Old Trafford this summer.

Amorim has denied suggestions he will launch an attack on his former club anytime soon for Gyokeres, but the player has since detailed how he has always wanted to play in the English top flight.

The 26-year-old left Championship club Coventry earlier last year on a £20 million contract following the club’s second division play-off final defeat to Luton.

He delivered an immediate return on Sporting’s record investment by spearheading the club’s battle to win a first league title under Amorim and is now being targeted by United, Arsenal and other top European clubs.

Gyokeres revealed his intention to return to England one day, telling Swedish Daily: “Of course [moving to Sporting] was different because my goal was to play in the Premier League.

‘That was my focus and the adjustment was difficult… but I thought about it, I talked to people around me who helped me a lot.

‘It started to look more and more like it was the right choice: playing in a top team and getting more opportunities during matches.

“In the end it seems like this was the best choice for me,” the striker added.

If United continue in their pursuit of Gyokeres, it is expected they will have to pay at least £70 million to secure his signature.

The move could be financed by selling players deemed surplus to requirements who could leave for as little as £40m after publicly stating his interest in leaving Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, United’s number 9 Rasmus Hojlund is doing his best to prove to Amorim that a new striker is not needed. He impressed at the start of his second season at the club, scoring seven goals in eighteen games in all competitions.
