Vikings rookie JJ McCarthy faces heartbreaking complication as he recovers from knee injury
There’s more bad news for injured Minnesota Vikings rookie JJ McCarthy.
The freshman quarterback underwent a second knee surgery on his right knee to address swelling that occurred during his ongoing rehabilitation, according to ESPN’s Kevin Seifert.
In August, it was confirmed that the 21-year-old would miss the entire rookie season after requiring a full meniscus repair in his right knee.
Now McCarthy has gone under the knife for the second time in several months. It is claimed he was given a biological injection as part of this latest procedure.
The good news for Vikings fans is that McCarthy’s timetable for his return reportedly remains unchanged, although it is unclear when he will be able to resume rehabilitation after the second procedure.

It was initially thought that the 21-year-old would only be on the sidelines for the first few weeks of the NFL season.
The quarterback was selected by Minnesota with the 10th overall pick of the 2024 draft, but Sam Darnold was the Vikings’ starter in his absence.
Without McCarthy, the Vikings have enjoyed a great start to the 2024 NFL season. Minnesota is currently 7-2 heading into Sunday’s game with the Titans.
McCarthy signed a four-year, $21.85 million contract with the Vikings, which included a $12.7 million signing bonus.
