Viewers mock casting of actor who looks nothing like Steve Waugh in Channel Nine miniseries Shane Warne: ‘Who is this supposed to be?’
Shane Warne’s biographical TV series titled Warnie debuted on Channel Nine on Sunday evening.
And many watching the program couldn’t help but point out that the actor who plays cricketer Steve Waugh, a close friend of the late Warne, doesn’t look much like the real man.
The show stars Waugh as talented Melbourne actor Tom Stokes, best known for his role in the British crime thriller series Trigger Point.
Viewers who tuned in were not impressed with what they saw, with many sharing their thoughts on Twitter.
“This is up there with one of the worst things I’ve ever seen. Is that meant to be Steve Waugh? Haha,” one wrote.

So guess who this is for? Steve Waugh. No, really,” another joked next to a photo of Stokes as Waugh.
“There’s so much wrong with Warnie, but the fact that Steve Waugh is nothing like Steve Waugh is pretty hard to overlook,” said another.
“Steve Waugh looks more like Bill Lawry,” another tweeted, while another asked, “Is that guy supposed to be Steve Waugh?”
“Don’t think I can keep this up. They don’t even look like who they’re supposed to be playing. Is that meant to be Steve Waugh,” one viewer said.
“If they cast Steve Waugh so poorly with an actor who looks absolutely nothing like him, I can’t imagine the rest,” someone else wrote.

“Dude sounds nothing like Shane Warne and dude looks nothing like Steve Waugh…we’re barely 5 minutes into it,” tweeted another.
Stokes said ahead of the show’s premiere that he was excited to portray Waugh, one of his heroes.
“Very excited to share this with you. Steve Waugh. A personal hero and a big part of my teenage years.
“It was amazing to dive deep into the man and his phenomenal performance,” he wrote on Instagram.
