Video of Chick-fil-A boss Dan Cathy saying white people should shine black people’s shoes resurfaces

Footage from 2020 of the former CEO of Chick-fil-A suggesting whites should polish black people’s shoes has resurfaced in the wake of the Christian company’s hiring of a diversity officer.

The three-year-old video shows Dan Cathy, son of Chick-fil-A founder S. Truett Cathy, getting on his knees and polishing the shoes of Lecrae Moore, a black Christian rapper, at an Atlanta church.

While discussing the topic of repentance at a June 14 roundtable at Passion City Church, Cathy said the world should have a sense of shame, embarrassment and “an apologetic heart.”

The video caused backlash online, with some critics calling it racist and bizarre.

The discussion came after the city was rocked by protests over the police shooting of Rayshard Brooks, which took place there the previous weekend, as well as the earlier death of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

While discussing the topic of repentance, Cathy got up and started polishing rapper Lecrae Moore’s sneakers, suggesting it could be a path for white people to redeem themselves

“We’ve had a dozen Chick-fil-A restaurants vandalized in the last week, but my plea would be for the white people instead of pointing the finger at that kind of criminal effort, would be to lower the level of frustration and exasperation and almost the sense of hopelessness that exists among some of those activists within the African American community,” said Cathy.

“It must hurt us, we as white people, until we are willing to take over and fight for our black, African-American brothers and sisters,” he added.

That’s when Cathy got up and started polishing Moore’s shoes, suggesting it could be a path for white people to redeem themselves.

“I invite people to put words into action, and if we need to find someone who needs their shoes shined, we just have to go ahead and shine their shoes,” the CEO said as he crawled over Moore’s shoes with a brush.

Crays’ comments sparked bewilderment and criticism on Twitter in 2020. The video has gone viral again, sparking backlash from online critics.

This comes after outraged conservatives called for a boycott of Chick-fil-A after news that the company hired a vice president of “diversity, equality, inclusion” went viral this week.

Chick-fil-A had originally released a statement in 2021 to speak about the company’s mission to care for both customers and employees, a goal they summarized as “Better at Together.”

We understand that the road to Better in Together looks different for every company.

‘At Chick-fil-A, Inc. it is our commitment to approach this work with intention and humility, always believing the best in each other and striving for common ground. We are still early on the road, but we are honored to have the opportunity to manage our organization’s greatest asset – our people – and are energized by the road ahead.”

McReynolds previously said that DEI is necessary to achieve the company’s business goal.

Chick-fil-A restaurants have long been known as a place where people know they’re being treated right. Modeling caring for others begins in the restaurant and we strive to ensure mutual respect, understanding and dignity everywhere we do business.”

“These principles are good business practices and are critical to fulfilling our business purpose,” he continued.

The company said it has supported several organizations, including Women in Business (WIB) and the Black Employee Resource Group (BERG).

Conservatives took to Twitter to voice their disapproval – some believed Reynolds was a new addition to the company.

One user said, “Something tells me Chick-fil-A will soon be called upon to repent.”

Another said, “Hello Chick-fil-A 100,000 hit points since app launch. You have now lost my family after this ridiculous, Marxist DEI statement. Very sad/disappointed and I know my $ doesn’t matter… but I guess it was only a matter of time before you allowed the communists to take over.”

Chick-fil-A was founded by devout Christians and is known for their religious ideals. The Cathys are the reason Chick-fil-A has traditionally been praised by conservatives for its strong Christian roots and cites religious values as part of their philosophy guiding their leadership of the company.
