A hostage situation broke out at a Mississippi Walmart after a distraught customer held a female worker at gunpoint before officers shot her dead.

The incident occurred around 5:40 p.m. at a Richland store Wednesday and ended shortly after police entered the building and shot the unidentified suspect.

Horrific footage taken by a shopper showed the woman pointing the gun directly at the head of a wide-eyed and terrified worker as she walked in front of the store.

It is unclear what prompted the woman to draw the gun, but she was seen shaking in anguish. The worker was not injured.

The incident occurred nearly a month after the mass shooting in Virginia that left six Walmart workers dead.

Footage from inside the Walmart showed the woman screaming loudly at the beginning of the video.

It’s not clear what he said, but he seemed to be waiting for something.

Seconds later, the woman caught a glimpse of the man recording the video and insisted that she was not going to harm the hostage.

‘Hey, I’m not going to hurt anyone,’ the woman yelled.

To which he replied: ‘Why don’t you let her go then?’

‘We’re not going to do this “good cop” thing,’ she yelled.

The video then cut out as two officers entered and spoke to the woman who was hiding with the hostage behind a corner.

“Raise your hands,” an officer yelled as the woman continued to yell in the background.

Police later confirmed that they entered the store and shot dead the woman holding the hostage.

One shopper recalled the moment she was about to walk into Walmart to do some last-minute Christmas shopping as others ran out the doors.

‘As soon as we walked in, people were running out and people were yelling at me and my cousin ‘get out,'” a woman told WAPT. “So we ran out and it was horrible and then we heard the shot.”

Richland Police Chief Nick McLendon called the officer-involved shooting “devastating” and stressed how difficult the holidays can be for some people.

“It’s devastating for all parties involved: the officers, everyone who was involved in this situation,” McLendon told the news outlet. “You know, with the holiday season coming up, mental health is a big problem because of the stress that comes with the holiday season.”
