Video appears to show moment fugitive Brazilian mayor Nacoita Leite plowed his vehicle into his estranged wife’s home and fired 15 shots at her as she slept with new boyfriend
A fugitive Brazilian mayor claims he went crazy after plowing his pickup truck into a house and firing 15 shots at his estranged wife as she slept with her boyfriend, according to a report from online news outlet G1.
Naćoita Leite, the mayor of the central city of Iporá, has been on the run since Saturday when he allegedly tried to kill his wife of 15 years and her partner, according to civil police.
Leite’s wife and her new love interest locked themselves in a room while he unloaded his gun. They were not injured in the shooting.
Brazilian news channel Metropoles obtained an audio message from the mayor to a friend in which he took responsibility for the shooting, revealing that he had been threatened by his wife’s friend.

‘The thing is that the man was already in a relationship with my ex-wife, that was the reason for the divorce. I never said that to anyone, but that was the reason, understand?’ said Leite, who is charged with attempted murder.
‘Then the man started threatening me, understand? And then you know we don’t like threats, but I’m crazy, understand?’ he added.
“And I did it there. Shouldn’t have done it, right? But I did it, it’s done, there’s no turning back, but thank you in advance for your support.”
Leite’s wife told TV Anhanguera that she and her boyfriend were in the bedroom when she heard the mayor calling her name.
“I heard my ex-husband yell my name a few times and then he unloaded a gun magazine at my bedroom door,” she said. “I’m sure he came to kill me.”
Some of the bullets fired pierced a mattress and a comforter.

Leite left the scene and went to a hotel, where he has been staying since he and his wife separated.
A video obtained by TV Anhanguera showed the mayor placing several weapons on the lobby’s service desk.
Civilian police said the politician used two weapons to carry out the attack but was unable to recover any.
During his flight, Leite went to his farm, which is currently being renovated, and traded his pickup for a white car, his associates told police.
He then returned to his wife’s home, where he stole a surveillance camera, police said.

Despite the mayor’s audio confession, his legal team denied that such an incident had occurred.
“It was never the intention of Mr. Naçoitan Araújo Leite, on that occasion or on any other occasion, to harm the physical integrity of anyone,” his lawyers said in a statement.
“The defense also states that further clarifications will be provided to the relevant authorities at the appropriate time, after access to all documents from the police investigation, as the files are secret, however incredible it may seem.”
In addition to the attempted murder charge, Leite is currently facing 20 lawsuits for defamation, threats and embezzlement in a state court in Goiás.
