Tragedy as swimmer dies after being pulled unresponsive from the water by beachgoers at Cosy Corner beach in Torquay

A swimmer has died at a popular beach despite paramedics and other beachgoers trying to revive him.

The man, who has yet to be identified, was pronounced dead after being pulled from the water at Cozy Corner beach in Torquay along Victoria’s Surf Coast. Saturday at 9:45 am.

Three ambulance units were called to the beach after bystanders entered the water to retrieve the man.

A report will be prepared for the coroner, Victoria Police said.

According to a police statement, CPR was performed for an extended period of time.

“The public performed CPR on the man, but it was unsuccessful,” the statement read.

The beach is in a sheltered spot popular with families, although other swimmers reported the waves were rough that day southeasterly wind.

Authorities say the death is not considered suspicious.
