Victoria Beckham reflects on her past insecurities over her skin as she reveals it’s the reason she never smiled in pictures: ‘I was so uncomfortable’
Victoria Beckham has admitted that the reason she always looked so stern in photos is because she was self-conscious about her skin.
Over the years, the fashion designer, 50, became synonymous with her steely pout, often failing to crack a smile at many a public event.
Victoria has long been open about her insecurities about her ‘problematic’ skin, having suffered from acne since her teens and struggled to become famous while having skin problems in her twenties.
And in a new interview with The TelegraphVictoria reflected on feeling “so uncomfortable” taking photos because she didn’t feel happy breaking into a smile.
During the chat, Victoria – who received the publication’s inaugural Beauty Brand of the Year award – told how she sought advice from skincare experts, with the fashion designer now following a strict routine to ensure her skin remains clear.
Reflecting on how insecure she was about her appearance, Victoria commented, “I probably looked stern in a lot of photos, but I felt so uncomfortable.”

And it wasn’t just her lack of public smiles that was a result of her skin problems, but also her strict diet.
Victoria has a famously restricted diet, with husband David Beckham previously revealing she has been eating the same meal every day for 25 years – grilled fish and steamed vegetables.
Explaining her decision to follow a very specific diet, Victoria added: “It was because of my skin that I became very careful about what I ate,” with the star cutting out meat and wheat, among other things.
Nowadays, Victoria feels much better about herself and even puts on a warm smile on many occasions.
In fact, she’s so relaxed about her appearance that she revealed she now even feels comfortable enough to go to glam events with very little makeup.
She commented, “If you had told me a few years ago that I would be stepping out on the red carpet to accept an award wearing just a little concealer and no foundation, I would have thought you were crazy, but that is what she said. I did that last week.’
The mum-of-five said she has found growing older to be truly liberating, admitting there was once a time when she would ‘scroll through comments about herself’, but these days she simply doesn’t have ‘time for it’.

Victoria rose to fame in the late 1990s alongside Geri Halliwell, Mel B, Emma Bunton and Melanie C as part of the Spice Girls.
They became the best-selling girl group of all time, and Victoria later had a brief solo career before entering the fashion world.
But the star – who is also known for her marriage to footballer David – recently admitted that the idea of fame doesn’t really appeal right now.
She told Harper’s Bazaar magazine: ‘It used to be fun to go out and be chased by paparazzi walking down Bond Street – and you got dressed knowing that was what you would get. I don’t want that anymore.
‘I’ve been doing this too long. I suppose I did growing up, but nowadays there’s just too much going on; too busy; too many kids to worry about. I woke up at 50, and I cared so much less.’
