Veteran Play School star dead at 76 following long battle with illness

Beloved series producer and former ABC head of children’s television Tim Brooke-Hunt died on Monday at the age of 76 after a long illness.

An obituary in The Sydney Morning Herald the showbiz veteran confirmed died in his home, surrounded by friends and family.

Tim was born in England and worked as an accountant before moving to Australia in the 1970s and beginning his career in television.

This media veteran had a career spanning over forty years in children’s entertainment, helping to produce iconic children’s programmes such as Play School and Blinky Bill.

In 2007, he joined the ABC as Executive Head of Children’s Content and three years later became the network’s Controller of Children’s Content.

The ABC confirmed Tim’s passing in a heartbreaking statement: “Our condolences go out to Tim’s family, friends and colleagues.”

Former colleague Michael Carrington added: ‘Tim was more than a brilliant colleague in the industry.

‘He was a friend and together we went on an incredible journey through children’s television.

‘Programs like Blinky Bill and Old Tom flourished under his leadership.’

Tim began his media career in 1983 at Yoram Gross Film Studios and founded his own production company in 2002.

In 2013, he left the ABC and was later appointed chairman of Flying Bark Productions, the Australian animation studio that made Blinky Bill: The Movie in 2015.

Throughout his successful career, Tim helped create some of Australia’s most iconic youth shows including Dance Academy, Blue Water High and Yakkity Yak.

A memorial service will be held on Friday in Tweed Valley, NSW.
