Very merry revellers get an early start to Christmas Day festivities

Partygoers have been photographed lighting up Britain’s main streets with just three nights before Christmas.

Temperatures remained moderate at 9C, allowing revelers to hit the clubs without being bundled up in coats and jackets.

Can can dancing in the street, high fives and some big hearted hugs were on display as revelers enjoyed their evenings.

But the party spirit was not for everyone, as at least one man was arrested by police in Leeds.

The Scottish Highlands are the only part of the UK likely to see a white Christmas, according to the Met Office.

Christmas is likely to be wet and overcast in much of the country, with heavy snowfall coming two weeks ahead of schedule so most people have a white Christmas.

Instead, warm air from the southwest will push temperatures up to 13C in southern England on Friday and with it a band of rain will spread across England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

At the same time, temperatures will hover above freezing in the north of Scotland and the lower levels may see some snow on Christmas night as cold winds blow from the north-west and blow across the UK. .

After this strip of rain, conditions will be drier in the south and east of England with gale force winds in the northwest, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Met Office spokesman Stephen Dixon said: “It’s going to be a cloudy and wet Christmas weekend for some parts of the UK and winter showers are likely to be confined to the far northwest of Scotland.”

A White Christmas, which the Met Office says is defined by a single snowflake falling anywhere in the UK on Christmas Day, is very likely to hit North West Scotland later on Sunday, with some snow moving from the north. to the west as part of a cooler air pool and some snow could even be seen in the North West UK at lower levels overnight on Christmas Day and into Boxing Day.

“What we’re seeing for Christmas Eve is staying mostly dry in the southern and eastern parts, but the northwestern areas will see some showers and some longer periods of rain for a while, including some heavy showers also for a short time and some snow falling on the high ground of Scotland.

“Some breezy conditions also on Christmas Eve, some gusty winds, especially in the north and west of the UK.

“That scene continues until Christmas Day with unsettled weather being run by the UK regime at the moment.”

For the weekend overall, he said the country would face typical weather for this time of year, with “a milder and more unstable pattern in charge.”

It added: “Strong winds and rain continue in the northern and western areas in particular. Further south will not be immune to the occasional shower, but drier weather is expected in the central and eastern parts of England.”
