In what may turn out to be her last appearance at the US Open, Venus Williams was unceremoniously ejected by Belgium’s Greet Minnen 6-1, 6-1 at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Tuesday night.
For the 43-year-old, who famously won the tournament in 2000 and 2001, it was an ill-fitting farewell.
It was a 74th minute demolition by the much more cheerful Belgian, who won 5/8 break point chances compared to Williams’ 0/6 conversion rate.
The older of the two Williams Sisters has been a fixture in Flushing Meadows since reaching the finals in 1997 at the age of 17 and while she hasn’t said much, it could be her final in Flushing.
Williams received a wild card into her 24th US Open tournament from the US Tennis Association earlier this month.
As usual for the loser, Williams left Arthur Ashe Stadium with no court interview.
