Vegan diets are believed to promote heart health and help you lose weight.
But a fascinating new experiment based on twins has revealed another benefit: they can boost your sex drive.
California researchers found that women who followed an animal-free diet for eight weeks were twice as likely to be converted by porn, compared to non-vegans.
The study echoes previous research in men that found that eating a vegan diet reduces the risk of erectile dysfunction.
Researchers asked two groups of women to watch porn while measuring the temperature of their genitals. Those who went vegan saw a 300 percent increase in their sexual appetite
Experts have previously hypothesized that eating more plants can improve blood flow, which can improve sexual function.
The latest findings can be seen in a new Netflix documentary, You Are What You Eat.
The series is based on research that follows 22 sets of twins as one follows a vegan diet for eight weeks and the other follows an omnivorous eating plan.
All participants were also encouraged to exercise more than they usually do. They were all subjected to a series of tests during the intervention to find out how their diet was affecting their health.
For the libido experiment, experts from Stanford University asked four women to watch various videos, including pornographic ones.
As they watched, laboratory equipment was used to measure the temperature of their genitals – a known sign of sexual arousal.
Studies have shown that veganism can improve heart health and extend lifespan, but it can also boost libido
First, participants watched a non-exciting documentary about birds to assess baseline measurements.
Then they chose a pornographic one. This was carried out both at the start and end of the study to assess the impact of the diet.
At the end of the experiment, aAll four of the women were more than twice as aroused by the porn – indicating that exercise alone can increase arousal.
However, the vegan participants had even better results, increasing their arousal by more than 300 percent.
Previous survey studies have shown that people who follow a vegan diet have a higher sex drive and a more satisfying sex life.
It's not clear why, but experts have previously suggested that this could be due to the positive effects of nutrients in vegetables on blood vessels, improving blood flow to the genitals.
