Varsity Lakes Gold Coast stabbing: Teen’s heroic act after allegedly stabbed by intruder, 52, during home invasion
- Boy, 15, allegedly stabbed by intruder
- He managed to fight off the alleged intruder
A 15-year-old boy has been praised for fighting off a man who allegedly broke into his home and stabbed him in the chest.
Troy Andrew Burns, 52, is believed to have snuck into the unit at Varsity Lakes, on Queensland’s Gold Coast, around 1am on Wednesday, armed with a golf club and a knife.
He then allegedly broke into the 15-year-old’s bedroom and woke the boy up before a struggle ensued between the couple.
The teenager was allegedly stabbed in the ribcage but managed to fight off the intruder.
The boy’s father rushed into the bedroom after hearing screams from his son.
“I was sleeping in bed and I heard screaming from the other room, very intense screaming,” he told Seven News.
“I jumped up and ran into the other room and saw the boy with an intruder, he was on top of the intruder…
“And he yelled at me to come in and help him.”
The boy’s father managed to restrain the man and the police were called and Burns arrested at the scene.
The boy’s grandmother, who was also in the home at the time and is a nurse, administered first aid while they waited for paramedics.

He has been charged with one count each of wounding, entering a residence and committing and possessing implements used in connection with certain crimes.
The boy was taken to hospital, but has since been released and is recovering well.
Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Dean Anderson said the reason why Burns was allegedly in the house was a “mystery.”
“It just seems like a random attack,” he told reporters.
Mr Anderson also praised the teen’s efforts.
“A huge act of courage on his behalf, and he did a fantastic job defending himself and his family at home,” he said.
“He seems very resilient about what happened and it could be a good story to tell his friends at school.”
The police also do not rule out that the burglar may have broken into the wrong house.
Mr Anderson added that the man was ‘cooperating’ with police.
Burns appeared briefly before Southport Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
His case will be discussed again on Thursday.
The investigations are continuing.
