Valerie Bertinelli, 63, slaps down trolls while going makeup-free with gray roots… as she continues to battle haters 15 years after losing 50lbs

Valerie Bertinelli has hit back at trolls who slammed her for using a filter on some of her social media images.

On Tuesday, the One Day At A Time actress used a zero filter as she showed off her makeup-free face to appeal to the trolls.

“I'm filming without a filter today because some of you all get really bent out of shape when I choose to use a filter,” the author, 63, began as she laughed and then seemed frustrated.

“This is me without makeup and this is not a filter,” Bertinelli said.

Bertinelli added that “99 percent” of her fans were nice, but the one percent bullied her. Then she added, “Some of you need to relax!”

Then she said a troll accused her of wearing a wig. At that point, she put her head down to show off her gray roots and then joked, “Can you please give me a wig without flipping the gray roots because I'm tired of getting my roots done every two weeks .'

Her Instagram fans loved the video.

Friend Tiffani Amber Thiessen wrote: “Don't give that to energy friend. It is not worth it. I literally erase and ignore that sound.

'I did that a long time ago for my sanity. LOL! Happy new year beautiful .'

'They need a filter that makes the negative reactions disappear!' one fan added, while another wrote, “Right ‽ …. use all the filters you want and I completely understand the “gray roots” Thang.'

Bertinelli has been bullied for her appearance ever since she posed in a green bikini for the cover of People magazine in 2009.

Life hasn't been easy for Valerie since that shoot: she saw her first husband Eddie Van Halen die and she also divorced her second husband, Tom Vitale.

Nowadays she is happier if she just eats what she wants.

“I no longer deprive myself and instead enjoy the whole experience of cooking,” Bertinelli shared People in November.

The actress is big on body positivity.

“I've spent over a decade changing my relationship with food,” the Food Network star added.

“All great leaps require small steps, patience, forgiveness, and a desire to grow and change.”

She said she has stopped counting calories.

“And I stopped thinking of certain foods as good or bad.” I stopped saying no and started saying yes.

“And I let myself enjoy it,” she adds. 'I enjoy the pleasures of life, and eating is one of those pleasures – an essential pleasure.

“This cookbook marks the journey that I – and so many of us – have taken to get to this place where I no longer deny myself,” she added.

And she said she has a desire to share what she creates with those she loves.

There are 100 recipes to “nourish the body and soul,” according to an official description from HarperCollins Publishers imprint Harvest.

In October, she posted her very first before photo as Jenny Craig's spokesperson.

'Health is not body size. Health is not the number you see on the scale. Your worth as a human being is not determined by your body,” she said as she stood in front of the mirror wearing a pink button-up shirt and jeans.

“The last time I wore these clothes I thought I was fat,” she said. And yet: 'I have never felt more beautiful, more peaceful and more mentally and emotionally stable than I do today.'

In February, she said on TikTok that she had lost 10 pounds.

The beauty was happy that she now has to go down a size in her jeans. The weight loss is due to her participation in Dry January, in which no more drinks are consumed.

And the Hot In Cleveland star also shared that the weight loss is just one of the big “side effects” of her alcohol-free plan.

The star said: 'These jeans I'm wearing were so tight a few months ago that I couldn't button them comfortably. Now they fit so loose that it's time for me to size down.'

This comes after she said she needed to 'heal' after coming across texts calling her 'fat and lazy'. She strongly hinted that the vile messages came from her ex-husband Vitale.

“Yeah, I like that side effect,” said Bertinelli, who seemed excited about it.

A fan asked if she is feeling better. “Maybe I'll do dry July too,” Valerie said.

The star lost 20 pounds in 2009 and posed in a green bikini for the cover of People magazine to show off her progress. But over the years the weight crept back on as she went through a painful divorce and watched her ex-husband Eddie Van Halen die.

When she announced she was quitting booze in January, she said she was enjoying it so far. 'I do it for two reasons. First, I want to try to reduce my sugar cravings. And I think alcohol makes that worse,” the TV vet said.

And she hoped to be healthier overall. 'I want to calm down the cortisol in my body that has been raging for five or six years. I've been in fight, flight, freeze, fawn mode. And I want to go rest and digest,” she said. “I think giving up alcohol will help me with that.”

And she made it sound like a good challenge. “If you're having a dry January, let's have fun. Let's do it together,” she said.

This comes after she told fans that she is doing better following her divorce from Vitale. Bertinelli gave fans insight into her doomed marriage to Vitale in a series of Instagram posts.

The actress referenced shocking text messages she saw and opened up about the mean things she was called in past relationships.

Bertinelli has also said that the Dry January cleanse has given her the ability to look at her mental health.

Bertinelli is best known to most fans for her role in One Day At A Time, which was only her second professional role to date; she is seen in a scene with Bonnie Franklin and Mackenzie Phillips

The star's success on television also extends to Hot In Cleveland (2010-2015); seen with Wendie Malick, Betty White and Jane Leeves

Her divorce from Vitale was officially finalized after 11 years of marriage. She declared on Twitter at the time: “I'm officially divorced!”

The Golden Globe winner was seen in a short selfie video as she kept a cheerful smile on her face.

Valerie tied the knot with businessman Tom in 2011, but the actress filed for legal separation in November 2021. In May 2022, she took another step and filed for divorce, citing “irreconcilable differences.”

The Hot in Cleveland star was forced to pay more than $2 million to finalize the divorce in November 2022.
