USMNT star Timothy Weah dines with ‘proud daddy’ George – the president of Liberia and Africa’s only ever Ballon d’Or winner – after scoring for the US in the World Cup draw against Wales

It may have been a frustrating result for his team, but USMNT star Timothy Weah took a moment to mark his first World Cup goal for the US by dining with his father, George, in Qatar.

George is the president of Liberia, but before entering politics, he was an extremely talented footballer in his own right.

He is and remains Africa’s only ever Ballon d’Or winner – winning the World’s Best Player award in 1995 after a year starring for Italian giant AC Milan and French team Paris Saint-Germain .

Weah Snr wrote on Twitter, “Just had dinner with my son Timothy Weah. Proud daddy.’

And while Timothy has some way to go before claiming such prizes, he’s clearly inherited much of his father’s skill.

Weah Jnr, who plays club football for Lille in France, scored a clever goal in his first-ever World Cup appearance for the US on Monday.

Passed through on goal by USA and Chelsea star Christian Pulisic, he converted clinically past Wales goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey.

Unfortunately for Weah and his team, however, Wales fought back in the second half, eventually grabbing a point after LAFC star Gareth Bale converted from the penalty spot.

While the result was not something to celebrate, Weah got to mark the personal milestone with his father, who wrote on Twitter, “Just had dinner with my son Timothy Weah. Proud daddy.’

Weah Senior is the only African winner of the Ballon d’Or, winning the prestigious award in 1995

Born in the United States – in Brooklyn, New York – Timothy grew up playing football in Florida and could choose to represent the US over his father’s country.

The US returns to the World Cup on Friday with a tough game against England, which won the first game 6-2 against Iran.

The United States then rounds out its Group B campaign by playing against Iran on November 29.
