Gregg Berhalter’s contract with the US Soccer Federation expires at midnight, in what has been cause for early New Year’s celebrations for US soccer fans across the country.

The United States advanced to the round of 16 of the World Cup in Qatar after finishing second in Group B.

Ultimately, their trip in the Middle East ended in a 3-1 loss to a more talented and experienced team from the Netherlands.

Gregg Berhalter has been far from a fan favorite during his time as head coach of the USMNT.

The performances at the international tournament were not enough to sway Berhalter’s critics, with many hailing the end of his current contract on Twitter.

“Please don’t renew,” one fan pleaded on Saturday. “I can’t wait to wake up and see that we are free of him,” added another.

A report in early December said talks were about to open on a new deal for the current manager.

Although little has been heard beyond this in the weeks leading up to the new year.

Most US fans were happy to learn that Berhalter’s current deal with US Soccer will be ending.

While Berhalter’s contract is about to expire, there is a chance it could be renewed before the USMNT takes the field on January 25 in an international friendly against Serbia.

Some American fans acknowledged this possibility on Twitter, attempting to educate and calm the emotion shown in commenting on the news.

“Many contract extensions are done behind closed doors and aren’t made public until days or weeks after signing,” one fan wrote.

Naturally, there were several far-reaching memes and tweets in reaction to the Berhalter news.

“Unfortunately, there is a decent chance that Berhalter has already signed an extension and the USSF is waiting for the right time to announce it.”

Naturally, there were several memes regarding the death of the former Columbus Crew coach. One in particular referenced a quote from NBA player Isaiah Thomas.

While another had a photoshopped image of an Arsenal banner in favor of ousting former manager Arsene Wenger.

The USMNT were brave in Qatar, but in the end they lacked the talent and intelligence to defeat the Netherlands.
