Users can now delete Meta’s Threads without losing their Instagram accounts… Here is how YOU can deactivate your profile

>

Meta launched Threads with the inability to delete the app without deactivating Instagram — but the company changed its mind.

Instagram head Adam Mosseri shared a post on Threads revealing the option has now been added to Settings.

To close a profile in Threads, users go to Settings, then Account, then Delete or deactivate profile, then select Delete.

Mosseri explained that all profile data will be hidden once it is deactivated and permanently deleted after 30 days.

Users were shocked in July to learn that their Instagram profile would be sacrificed when the so-called “Twitter-killer” app was scrapped due to a platform entanglement.

Meta launched Threads on July 5, and gained 100 million new users within a week.

The app is designed to be an extension of Instagram, where users can only sign up through the photo and video sharing app.

Mark Zuckerberg’s rollout is believed to have been rushed to take advantage of the chaos at Twitter’s then-headquarters, where CEO Elon Musk was criticized for changing several features of what is now known as X.

The text chat platform is linked to Instagram, allowing users to follow accounts they’re already interested in on the photo-sharing app.

But many parallels have also been drawn with Elon Musk’s X, based on its thread-like posts that allow users to publicly share their opinions.

While users flocked to the Meta app when it launched, it is now struggling to attract new members.

The number of daily active users has decreased by 82 percent since July 31.

A September report by Insider Intelligence showed that the threads are near the bottom of the most popular social media platforms, ahead of only Tumblr.

It has a rating of 3.0 out of five stars in the Apple Store, which shows that the app has as many one-star reviews as five-star reviews.

Google Play shows that the app has a rating of 3.9.

Users quickly realized they were stuck on threads two days after the app was launched, and were only able to delete individual posts.

Word spread to X, where one user described Threads as a “saw trap.”

They wrote: “We can’t delete our threads account without deleting our IG?? They knew (people) would hate it right away, so they made it a chainsaw trap.”

“I already deactivated my threads account, but it turns out you can’t delete your threads account *without deleting your Instagram account too* so maybe don’t sign up,” another said.

“I wish I knew that,” another person commented. “I think I’ll deactivate if I decide I don’t want to anymore,” while another added: “Thanks for the warning.” I’ll never make a thread account, then.’

Amid the frenzy, Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, took to Threads to clarify the situation surrounding the account deletion.

“I’ve been getting some questions about deleting your account,” he said.

“To clarify, you can deactivate your Topics account, which hides your profile and content, you can set your profile to private, and you can delete individual Topics’ posts — all without deleting your Instagram account.”

“Threads is powered by Instagram, so right now it’s just one account, but we’re looking into a way to delete your Threads account separately.”
