USA wrestling star Alan Vera, 33, dies after suffering cardiac arrest while playing soccer with friends

American wrestler Alan Vera died Monday night at the age of 33, two months after suffering a cardiac arrest during a football game in New Jersey.

Vera suffered a cardiac arrest on July 29 in Jersey City, New Jersey, according to his soccer team, New Jersey Wolves FC.

After fighting to stay alive for weeks, Vera passed away after “an unexpected infection manifested itself over the weekend.” via a GoFundMe page to help with expenses for Alan’s wife Elena Pirozkhova and their newborn daughter Alina, who was born this summer.

Pirozkhova is a two-time Olympic competitor in women’s wrestling for Team USA.

Vera narrowly missed qualifying for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris in Greco-Roman wrestling up to 97 kilograms.

“Our hearts are broken. Our sincere thoughts and prayers go out to Elena, Alina and Alan’s entire family, and to all who knew Alan,” USA Wrestling Executive Director Rich Bender said in a press release.

“The wrestling community mourns the loss of a great champion whose incredible life touched so many people within USA Wrestling and around the world.”

As of Wednesday afternoon, the GoFundMe page for Vera’s family had raised more than $43,000.

“Since he came into my life in 2016, he has been a true leader, always willing to do anything for anyone who needs it,” said Herb House, USA Wrestling National Greco-Roman coach. “His selflessness and dedication have left a lasting impression on me.”

Vera first played internationally for Cuba and stood on the international stage for the country. In 2016 she won the Pan American title.

Later that year, Vera emigrated to the United States and has been competing for America ever since.
