After waiting for eight years to appear in a World Cup, Nike’s kits for the U.S. Men’s National Team should mark the occasion with jerseys to make the country proud.
Instead, we were given these two shirts.
Images leaked of what are supposedly the USMNT’s 2022 FIFA World Cup home and away kits and they underwhelm and disappoint at the same time.
With crests in the middle of both shirts and Nike swooshes on the sleeves, these designs seem boring, ugly, and uninspired all at once.
Nike’s 2022 World Cup kits have been leaked, drawing ire and disgust on social media
Weston McKennie (seen wearing the most recent US kit) isn’t a fan of the World Cup threads
The shoulders on the home kit look as if they belong on an American football field, not a soccer pitch.
Adding the bare minimum of white and blue to the sleeves and an oddly shaped blue stripe under the collar seem like the design team realized at the last minute they needed to turn this into a USA jersey.
As for the away kit, the odd tie-dye-esque pattern looks more like something you’d see under a microscope than on a jersey.
While jersey leaks don’t typically hold water, these could be considered as good as done thanks to what seems like confirmation from USMNT midfielder Weston McKennie.
Under an Instagram post of the leaked kits, McKennie let his thoughts be known, suggesting he expressed his disappointment to either Nike or the U.S. Soccer Federation.
Reaction across social media was mixed, with mostly negative comments ranging from disgust to demands for the government to intervene.
Weston McKennie all but confirmed these were the kits, setting off a firestorm online
