Key events
14 minutes: Weah makes a stellar, blazing run down the right, simply outrunning the German players who had pushed for the corner. Pulisic races through the middle, Weah’s pass finds him and the ball is played for a corner at the other end. It turned into a classic game of attack versus counterattack, perhaps more by accident than intention, but this may have been the United States’ best chance.
13 minutes: Corner given to Germany, and it looks like a goal is coming.
11 minutes: OUT OF THE WOODS. Pascal Gross finds himself all alone at the top of the area, the ball is given to him and the United States are lucky that his shot only hits the post. Then even luckier that Turner’s rushing rebound didn’t cross the goal line.
If you got 11 minutes in the “first mention of the disappearance of Tyler Adams in the United States” pool, congratulations.
10 minutes: Balogun charges through the center, sends the ball straight to Weah, and Weah’s cross is cleared for a corner. Germany won the aerial battle with the first free kick of the day.
9 minutes: LUCK… and it’s Reyna who brings the ball down the right and cuts out a dangerous cross before ter Stegen can trap the ball. The United States may not play specifically for the counterattack, but it seems like a powerful tool to have in your back pocket.
7 minutes: Musiala dances to the side of the American penalty area. He can’t get a good cross out of it, but it’s surely a way to boost Germany’s confidence.
A few seconds later, Musiala carries the ball confidently into the center of the defense. This is uncomfortable for the United States, to say the least.
6 minutes: Probably a little more possession than the US defense would like to concede less than 30 yards from their own goal, but Germany can’t get any sort of danger out of that.
4 minutes: Christian Pulisic put the ball in the back of the net, but the whistle had sounded a few seconds earlier because Pulisic was offside, barely in the German half. The crowd, however, seemed to appreciate Pulisic’s “score” during the “breakaway”.
3 minutes: Nervous moment for Matt Turner, since the American goalkeeper seems to lose his footing a little before clearing under pressure.
Julian Nagelmann looks like he’s dressed for either a Pearl Jam concert or a yoga class.
1 minute: The American defenders and midfielders chained around ten passes in their own half but lost possession when crossing midfield. Germany returns the favor.
Peep! Yeah, we’re finally playing.
Our referee is Fernando Guerrero from Mexico.

We begin with a minute of silence, given all the recent horrible news. A few voices could be heard, but generally it was well observed.
Weather forecast …
Today’s weather on the mid-Atlantic coast of the United States is “meh.” Mid 50s Fahrenheit (low 10s Celsius) with annoying rain. This is exactly what I’m told to expect when I visit Ireland or England, and yet the weather is always beautiful when I’m there. Odd.
Meet the new boss…not the same as the old boss
No, this is not a reference to US coach Gregg Berhalter, who was out of contract for a time and then returned, to the dismay and concern of many US media and fans .
Germany’s new boss is 36-year-old Julian Nagelsmann. I have clothes that are older than that. He is, however, already a veteran of coaching in the Bundesliga, with great success with Hoffenheim. He was fired from Bayern Munich for the cardinal sin of temporarily falling to second place.

Can Germany spring a surprise?
Wait…upset?
If you believe The FIFA rankings, the United States (No. 13) should be favorites against Germany (No. 14). But the more it’s mathematical Elo Ratings having Germany at 13th and the United States at 24th, which seems about right.
In any case, it will be a good overview of the American team against good competition. As with any friendly match, individual performances will be just as important to watch as the final score, and thanks to Fifa’s insistence on robust Nations League competitions, this type of match is all too rare for coaches to looking for a good test of the player pool.
Beau will be here shortly.
