‘Selfish’ parking act infuriates Aussies – as calls grow for a tax on one particular type of driver

Australians are outraged by a driver’s selfish parking law, reigniting calls for US-style parking from pick-up truck owners.

A photo posted to Reddit on Sunday of a giant GMC pick-up taking up two spaces at Burwood Brickworks in Melbourne’s east sparked outrage.

Many angry motorists are fed up with these giant motorists and are demanding drastic measures.

Some councils across Australia are exploring the possibility of charging drivers of super-sized vehicles extra to park their cars.

Yarra City Council unanimously decided last month to investigate the issue.

Greens councilor Sophie Wade said Yahoo it was intimidating to share the road with larger vehicles.

“We have streets that are just not designed for these types of vehicles,” she said.

‘They are narrow, we have a lot of pedestrians, cyclists, shoppers in busy shopping streets, many children going to school and childcare.

“It’s nerve-wracking when these big, gigantic vehicles come at you.”

NSW Greens transport spokeswoman Cate Faehrmann said “the size of SUVs is getting ridiculous” and supported measures to discourage their use if they are not actually needed for work.

“Large SUVs take up a lot more space on the road, even when parked, so if higher parking fees make some drivers take the train or cycle instead, then turn it on,” she told the police. Sydney Morning Herald.

Countries around the world have addressed the issue and introduced policies to combat the rise of oversized vehicles.

Paris residents voted earlier this year to charge SUVs three times as much for on-street parking in the city center compared to standard cars.

“Parisians have made a clear choice… other cities will follow,” Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo said.

Drivers across Australia are hoping councils will follow the French example.

Social media users reacted enthusiastically to the photo of the pickup truck in Melbourne’s shopping centre.

One described the giant ute as a ‘yank tank’ and ‘d**k extender’.

Another had a rather drastic suggestion: “Remove the air valves from the tires.”

While another responded very bluntly: ‘I hate those bloody utes so much.’
