He was put in temporary charge of the team after Gregg Berhalter’s contract expired at the end of the World Cup in Qatar in December.

But now moving on, US Soccer announced on Tuesday, Callaghan has been promoted to the head coaching role after spending the past four years as an assistant with the US.

“BJ has been an integral part of the USMNT staff for the past four years as this young team has grown and developed,” said US Soccer Sports Director Matt Crocker.

“Having teamed up with Anthony Hudson over the past five months, we are confident he is prepared and ready to lead this group into the summer tournaments.

“We are grateful to Anthony for the great job he has done and wish him every success in the future.”

The USSF said the decision to elevate Callaghan, a 41-year-old from Ventnor, New Jersey, to the next level was made by Matt Crocker, who is leaving relegated Southampton to become the USSF’s director of sports on August 2. Crocker is leading the search for a permanent coach to guide the team through the 2026 World Cup, which the Americans will co-host.

Neither Callaghan nor Crocker were made available to the media by the USSF to discuss the change.

Callaghan thinks he has the full pool of players available for the final four of the CONCACAF Nations League. The defending champion Americans will play against Mexico on June 15 and against Canada or Panama three days later.

Most European players are expected to skip the CONCACAF Gold Cup, which begins on June 24 and runs through July 16.

Callaghan played with Ursinus and spent six seasons with Villanova, becoming an assistant head coach. He worked in the youth academy of the Philadelphia Union in Major League Soccer and became an assistant coach in 2014.

“I understand the responsibility of the track and am honored to have the opportunity to build on the progress this group has made over the past four years,” Callaghan said Tuesday.

“Together we have built a strong culture and understanding of how we want to play, and we expect to build on that progress. Our goal is clear: to defend both of our CONCACAF titles.”
