US Open: Organisers of Grand Slam cancel wheelchair tennis for 2024 tournament due to Paralympics clash

Wheelchair tennis will not take place at the 2024 US Open due to a conflict with next year’s Paralympic Games.

The 2024 US Open starts on August 26 and ends on September 8, while the Paralympic Games in Paris are held in the same fortnight.

This is the fourth time wheelchair events at Flushing Meadows have been canceled for the same reason; 2008, 2012 and 2016 were the previous years.

Sky Sports News has asked the ITF and US Open for comment.

Alfie Hewett defeated Gordon Reid in an all-British men’s wheelchair singles final at this year’s tournament, and Diede de Groot of the Netherlands defeated Japan’s Yui Kamiji in the women’s singles.

Andy Lapthorne, who reached the wheelchair quad doubles final and won the title twice in his career, has criticized the US Open decision.

“It’s disappointing and from a player perspective I’m trying to stand up for the playing group because there are a lot of players from countries who literally depend on the four Grand Slams for their income, to pay their bills and to keep performing.” playing on the tour,” Lapthorne said BBC Sports.

“Losing one of the biggest events of the year, especially at the end of the year, will be very difficult for a large part of the playing group. You’re literally asking them to go from Wimbledon in July to the end of June. ” the Australian Open, which will take place in early February, with no real payout. It is a difficult situation, but I hope we can find a solution on this occasion.”
