Only two non-MLS teams will advance to the Round of 16 in the US Open Cup after three of the four USL Championship challengers are eliminated on Wednesday night.
After Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC upset the MLS-leading New England Revolution along the way, there was hope that either Loudoun United FC or New Mexico United would pull out a ‘cup set’ and knock out their competition from the league above.
Unfortunately for both teams, they were both dealt with quite easily by their MLS opponents and are not going through in the US Open Cup.
Loudoun United conceded five goals in 36 minutes, while against the Columbus Crew they were reduced to ten men in just 10 minutes. Loudoun scored a consolation goal in the 86′ to finish with a 5-1 score.
In the meantime, New Mexico United also trailed in the 36th minute, but Austin FC was able to shoot two goals past the ‘Black and Yellow’, making the 2-0 score the final score.

Elsewhere, Nashville SC was able to beat FC Dallas at home to advance to the next round
In a USL-on-USL matchup, Birmingham Legion FC easily took on Memphis 901 FC and won 3-0, with the go-ahead goal going to former US international Juan Agudelo.
Elsewhere, in MLS action, USMNT striker Brandon Vazquez netted the night’s lone goal as his FC Cincinnati squad knocked out struggling New York City FC.
Struggling Sporting Kansas City went down 1-0 early at the Houston Dynamo. However, even with Houston’s Chase Gasper sent off in the 35th minute, they were unable to capitalize on the man advantage as the only goal was the only one scored that night.
Nashville SC was also able to do business against MLS opposition by beating FC Dallas 2-0.
