A US embassy official has been ‘sacked’ for supporting England in the run-up to tonight’s Qatar World Cup game between the two countries.

The US Embassy in London posted a cheeky video of their spokesman showing his office decked out in English regalia as the Three Lions continue their World Cup campaign.

The official Twitter account of the US embassy in London then jokingly announced that he had been fired ahead of tonight’s England v US game.

A video posted online shows diplomat Aaron Snipe wearing an English scarf and shirt, with his office draped in flags and pennants.

A colleague tells him, “HR called. They want to talk to you upstairs now.’

Another official then tells him, “Look man, I don’t know why I have to be the one to remind you, but you’re an American.

“You work for the American embassy. You can’t root for England.

“I need you to take off those decorations, take off that shirt, and I don’t want to have to call you here again.”

Mr Snipe then says ‘OK, good call’ before walking out and taking off his England shirt to reveal an England away shirt underneath.

The US Embassy shared the new video online with the caption, “We are sad to announce the departure of our spokesman Aaron Snipe – but some things are more important than diplomacy.

“Come on Team USA!”

It is not the first time that American Snipe has expressed his support for his adopted English football team. He celebrated the lionesses’ triumph at the European Women’s Championships in the summer with another video.

Snipe told MailOnline at the time that the clip was the brainchild of two British social media team members at the embassy, with the help of two other American colleagues.

He said: “Obviously we are big, big fans of English football at the Embassy.”
