The US embassy in Turkey has denied claims that the husband of the US consul general in Istanbul crashed his car while drink-driving and then drove away after claiming diplomatic immunity.

Turkish media reported that Mounir Elkhamri, the husband of US Consul General in Istanbul Julie Eadeh, was driving a consular vehicle in the city when it collided with another vehicle around 5:40 am today.

Police confirmed that the other driver was injured in the accident on Buyukdere Avenue and was taken to hospital.

Local media claimed that Elkhamri had been found to exceed nearly five times the country’s alcohol limit.

He was not arrested by police officers after he cited diplomatic immunity, according to reports.

But the US embassy in Turkey denied the reports, saying in a statement that Elkhamri had not been involved in a car accident and was not in Istanbul at the time of the collision.

Police confirmed that the other driver was injured in the accident on Buyukdere Avenue and was taken to hospital.

The husband of the United States consul general has not been involved in a car accident and was not in Istanbul at the time of the reported collision. We are in contact with the Turkish authorities on this matter,” the embassy said.

It comes after the wife of a US diplomat used diplomatic immunity to leave the UK after a fatal car crash and was brought to justice last week.

US citizen Anne Sacoolas, 45, was sentenced at the Old Bailey in London, UK, to eight months in prison, suspended for 12 months, for causing the death of British Harry Dunn, 19, on August 27, 2019.

Coward: Anne Sacoolas was sentenced at the Old Bailey to eight months’ reprieve for causing the death of Harry Dunnl last week. Now footage of the 45-year-old running from a reporter in a Washington courthouse after the virtual sentencing has surfaced.

19-year-old Harry Dunn (pictured) died in August 2019, when he was struck by a car driven by Sacoolas in the UK.

The former spy was driving on the wrong side of the road when she collided with Dunn outside RAF Croughton in Northamptonshire. He was thrown from his motorcycle when Sacoolas’ Volvo XC90 burst into flames. He later he died in the hospital.

But Sacoolas did not appear before the Central Criminal Court in London to be sentenced last week after fleeing to the US, and followed the advice of a government employer not to attend.

The footage emerged as the former CIA agent was filmed walking away from a reporter while refusing to answer why she did not appear in person in court.
