How did the violence start?
According to the UCLA student newspaper, The Daily Bruin, supporters of Israel attempted to demolish a pro-Palestinian protest camp on campus Tuesday evening.
Security was tightened after officials said there were “physical altercations” between factions of protesters at the encampment declared illegal by UCLA.
At least one person was taken to hospital with unclear injuries.
It comes as police respond to clashes involving pro-Palestinian protesters on college campuses across the US in the past two weeks, with more than a thousand arrests made.
Protesters use fireworks, traffic cones and a skateboard as weapons
US media have reported that protesters threw fireworks at the pro-Palestinian encampment, while traffic cones, wooden pallets, a scooter and even a skateboard were used as weapons during clashes.
Hostilities reportedly lasted nearly two hours before Los Angeles Police Department officers gathered in a nearby parking lot.
Police vehicles could be seen in the area, but officers did not immediately intervene.
Footage circulating on social media showed fireworks being set off at the encampment, while one protester claimed he was pepper-sprayed during the chaos.
What happened in New York?
Protesters at Columbia University smashed windows, overturned furniture and caused damage to an occupied campus building in Hamilton Hall. The police made more than a hundred arrests on Tuesday evening.
New York Police Department officers burst onto campus just after 9 p.m. to break up an encampment set up nearly two weeks ago when students took over the hall.
What happened at UCLA?
Violence erupted overnight at UCLA between pro-Palestinian and pro-Israeli demonstrators.
Protesters, some armed with sticks, were seen pushing and kicking each other, while at one point a group piled on to one person lying on the ground, kicking and punching them until others pulled them out of the scrum.
Vice Chancellor Mary Osako said in a statement
Horrific acts of violence occurred at the encampment this evening and we immediately called the police for mutual aid. The fire brigade and medical personnel are on site. We are sick of this senseless violence and it must end.
The clashes took place just outside a tent camp, where pro-Palestinian protesters erected barricades and plywood for protection – and counter-protesters tried to tear them down. Police vehicles could be seen in the area, but officers did not immediately intervene.
